Still More Firefighter Casualties at Deutsche Bank Building

Two more firemen have been injured at the Deutsche Bank Building, where two other firemen were killed last weekend as a consequence of the hyper–anal-retentiveness of government bureaucrats who demand that every molecule be inspected for asbestos before removal. It was slated for demolition as a result of damage sustained on 9/11, yet still stands there in its funeral veil of black mesh, inviting disaster.

Now that a piece of construction equipment has fallen from the 23rd floor, injuring another pair of firemen, have the bureauweenies who have dragged this out for six years learned their lesson? Hardly.

According to a spokesman for the state agency in charge of construction at Ground Zero, all work at the site has been halted. Furthermore:

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation is coordinating an investigation with all relevant city, state and federal agencies.

Screams Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer:

They have got to shut this site down pending a full review.

Ten years from now, the Deutsche Bank Building will still stand there wrapped in its black burka, firemen and/or workers will still get injured inside, and bureaucratic fools like Stringer will still demand reviews and investigations, assuring that the demolition is never brought to a close.

Still it stands: a monument to bureaucratic paralysis.

From the beginning of the 20th century to about 1970, asbestos was used everywhere, from offices to theater curtains to ships. How did we ever survive?
