Nas-ty Rapper to Perform at Virginia Tech
On September 6, a special "Concert For Virginia Tech" will take place at the university, in honor of the dozens of defenseless victims gunned down by Cho Seung-Hui. According to the press release,
the concert was conceived as a way to help the university community move forward in the aftermath of the April tragedy at Virginia Tech.
Among those performing is the rapper Nas. Here's how the press release describes him:
Nas is hip hop's foremost lyricist and thinker. And, some would argue, hip hop's conscience.
OpinionJournal offers a sample of his lyrics. Please excuse the foremost lyricist and thinker's language:
One 44, two 45's
3 loaded clips, 4 niggas roll, one nigga drives
500 Benz, 6 reasons why
This kid should die
We shootin every motherfucker outside
Pulled on his block, jumped out the car, guns in our hand
At the same time everybody ran
There that nigga go, hiding in the crowd
Let the trigger blow, 7 shots now he lying on the ground
Blood on the floor
Then we shot some more
Niggas he was with
2 niggas hit, one nigga fell
One tryed to run, go get him son
Make sure he's done before we bail, i aint trying to goto jail
Must handle beef, code of the street
Load up the heat, if these nigga think they could fuck around
Real niggas do real things
By all means, niggas knowin how we get down… It goes…
Chorus (4X)
Shoot 'em up, just shoot 'em up, what…
(whispering)
Kill kill kill, murder murder murder
I'm sure Cho would be touched.

So, for this of us playing along at home, what exactly is the connection between black gangsters shooting each other and a Korean loony tune shooting a bunch of innocent passers by?
Other than both involving firearms, of course.

I don't get it... either.
College students entertained by a moron.. whose claim to fame is mumbling about something akin to the violence on the streets in the seediest part of the ghetto.
The students listening to this hard-hearted crap have no idea how to honor the deaths of their fellow students who could have been murdered by a person being influenced by such crap as this person spews.

I think what Van is pointing to is that this guy is glorifying the act of shooting innocent people. What way is that to remember the people who died in the shooting.
Posted by: Eric at August 7, 2007 7:06 PM
Eric, sure. I took Van's point; it's VT's that I don't get. To help a university move forward after a shooting massacre they invite some a-hole who chants about perpetrating the same crime? How does that make sense?

If a white rapper wrote a song like that it would be bad. But since hes black he can get away with just about anything. Lest Jesse Jerkson and Al Sharptongue start protesting.

pretty soon he won't be able to call his ho' a b*tch.

Ah hip hop... such an eloquent language of the black victim mentality.
*gasp* did I say that out loud?
It amuses me that rappers still don't know the difference between a "clip" and a "magazine." I don't know of any automatic .44 magnum pistols, but most .45 caliber pistols (of the .45 ACP variety) use MAGAZINES.
Clips are the small spring-steel devices that hold loose rounds so that they might be "stripped" (hence the term 'stripper clip') rapidly into a weapon, usually of the bolt-action variety, but some are used for stripping into a magazine, so that one does not have to load them 1 at a time.
But I'm sure this eloquent "thinker" knew that already.

This guy is considered a "thinker"? About as deep of a thinker as the kiddie pool.

Huck,
You must be ex-military. You can always tell a military man. He can't understand the civilian fascination with Hummers, camouflage clothing, or firearms.

The desert eagle is a 44 magnum pistol.
Plus it's available in a 'super-bling' gold colored plating, which is good for the rappers.

I now notice you said 'AUTOMATIC' - so you were correct.

Having this rapper at the VT concert would be like having Michael Moore at a charity concert for starving Africans.

"Eric, sure. I took Van's point; it's VT's that I don't get. To help a university move forward after a shooting massacre they invite some a-hole who chants about perpetrating the same crime? How does that make sense?"
It doesn't make sense. Most left- wing garbage like that makes zero sense. I really hope some of the more compassionate people in that area protest when this psycho takes the stage.
I really hate gangsta rap music, for so many reasons. It requires almost no musical talent, tends to promote racism, murder, and rape, and most gangsta rap artists seem to very much enjoy slinging around the "n" word, which was used for centuries to dehumanize their own race.
Posted by: Adam at August 9, 2007 7:28 AM
Adam, you have committed a felony: using "gangsta rap" and "music" in the same sentence...
Obviously the people putting on this spit-on-their-graves "concert" are as warped and limp-wristed as the 80+ Duke University profs/sissies who have refused to change their stance against their 3 falsely accused lacrosse players.

Bill O'Reilly is now involved! O'Reilly has threatened the rapper and the president of Virginia Tech over the free concert. O'Reilly has a history of hate-mongering, denouncing people, distorting facts and creating riots! Please inform Nas or his publicist about the situation. I am not saying having Nas was a bad move, but if the rapper was to perform as an inspiration to those affected by the tragedy, then they should allow the rapper to perform. With Bill O'Reilly, the commentator is known to be controversial and affective in his threats. O'Reilly usually gets what he wants! And to take away something people were anticipating is just wrong! I know I am on a conservative web site and I qoute myself to be fiscally conservative/social liberal more to libertarian stance! But please don't let people like O'Reilly destroy a free concert!
And just a thought, by the the way! Why don't they have Bill O'Reilly perform at Virginia Tech! I am so sure that VA Tech students rather hear a man who has nothing but politics!

I am shocked that VT would use a "gangsta rapper" to help get over this kind of tragedy. Its very idiotic. I'm not shocked O'rielly has a problem with it... I think he has a problem with every black person not being in shackles while serving him lemonade on a southern plantation. He's a Racist! Now to the people who only see and or listen to "gangsta rappers" like 50cent(fitty cent according to ignorant white people who make fun of urban slang), and other "main stream rap" so-called artist. Gangsta rap started as a diary if you will of black youth in L.A., and other big cities in the U.S. The music(or what i call crap) you hear now thats dubbed "gangsta rap" is a product of main stream $$$$ money. nanc made a great point in his or her comment, the majority of
gangsta rappers are'nt even "gangsta". The majority of them talk violence just to get money, So of course they would call a CLIP A MAGAZINE. I am a music producer(all music), Im also Black/African American, so I can tell you from personal experience if you are listening to "RAP" your listening to Crap(hey that rymes). HIP-HOP IS ART, try listening to it and you'll see that HIP-HOP artist have something to say. Maybe the Dean of VT should do the same.
-STOP PROMOTING RAP IT KILLS, AND TRAPS YOUNG MINDS
IN THIS CONSTANT "LIVE FOR TODAY" ATTITUDE. MOST RAPPERS ARE STUPID A GOOD WAY TO TELL THAT THEY ARE IS TO LISTEN TO THEM. IT'S NOT COOL TO PROMOTE VIOLENCE, MISTREATMENT OF WOMEN, AND THE N BOMB(THE N WORD) WHEN ALOT OF WHITES AND EVERYONE ELSE NOT BLACK ARE THINKING IT ANYWAY. IF WE AS A PEOPLE(BLACK PEOPLE) USE THE N WORD OURSELVES HOW CAN WE EXPECT OTHER RACES AND PEOPLE NOT TO USE IT. THATS COMMON SENSE-
ALSO NAS is not a thinker and if you listen to his rymes you would hear that. He tries to sound educated but he's not.
-THE QUESTION IS WOULD IT BE A PROBLEM IF EMINEM WAS PERFORMING ONE OF HIS FIRST HITS(WHICH WERE VERY VIOLENT)?
-WOULD IT BE A PROBLEM IF THE ROOTS OR COMMON WERE TO PERFORM AT VT?-

Any of you who think that Nas is a gangsta rapper obviously dont know a thing about hip hop and you sound foolish saying so. Most of the songs that hes getting bad press over where released in the 90's. IF you had heard any songs that Nas has recently released you wouldnt be so fast to paint him with negative brush. Now being an avid listener of hip hop and rap, i can obviously say that much of the "MAINSTREAM" rap is very negative amd promotes violence and a self-serving attitude. But if your gonna condemn gangsta rap then also condemn violent movies and porn and capitalism also. When i was younger, i didnt hear a gangsta rap song and want to go out and kill somone jus like i wouldnt if i had watched a violent movie. LAst time i checked, this is America and you can put out "art" that others may not like. And the fact that Bill O would come down on Nas for performing at a concert instead of the fact that Americans are dieing everyday from guns in Iraq jus baffles me. Would he had felt better if George Bush wouldve went to VT to discuss the the negative affects of gun violence and killing? O wait Bush cant discuss this without being a hypocrit! People need to grow up. If you dont like rap music thats one thing, but to act like its the worst thing that affects America today is jus ridiculous. Nas wouldnt go into VT and start screaming "shoot em up". NAs has put out songs that celebrate Americas youth and how to fight poverty and violence.

bunch of fools in here who don't own one nas cd but wanna talk about him.
Posted by: JFK at August 16, 2007 4:26 PM
Obviously you guys don't a have a clue to what you're talkin' about.... Nas is FAR from a "gangsta rapper"... and by far one of the intellectual and respected lyricists in Hip-Hop... and them lyrics that's posted are from his song "Shoot 'Em Up" from the 90's.... the song isn't glorifyin' violence.... it's basically tellin' a story about a shootout... Nas grew up in one of roughest housing projects in New York City... he grew up around that... and that's what he mirrors in his music... and for those who said Nas was as deep a thinker as kiddie pool????.... Nas's album "Illmatic" is one of the most top essential albums in music history.... and for the editor of this trash article to take one song... and generalize his WHOLE catalogue from that without listenin' his other songs... straight bogus... if you wanna cherry pick that song.... then why not get his song "Just A Moment" where he pays homage to the friends and family he lost, and also the soldiers in Iraq, why not "I Know I Can" which is a positive ode to the kids, why not his CLASSIC song "The World Is Yours"???... Why not his song "We Will Survive"???... Why not his song "Never Goin' Back"???.... Why not his song "One Love" where he's reachin' out to his friends that's locked up jail.... Why not his song "Black Girl Lost" where he tells black women how to better themselves.... if you gonna attack Nas.... do some damn research and attack his WHOLE catalog.... which OBVIOUSLY you didn't because you don't jack shit about Nas... or what he stands for.... Just how he said at recent concert.... "The tongue is mighter than sword, and my weapon of choice is my voice".... It's pseudo journalists like y'all that make journalism look bad in general.... And it from one Virginia Tech student who actually spoke on the situation... the concert was organized by the student council... they chose the acts... not the President of VT... and BSA (Black Student Association) wanted an artist that can relate to to diversify the show for the ENTIRE audience... and they chose Nas.... and Nas didn't charge them... which tells you that he's doin' this concert from his heart....

The ignorance of uninformed people on this matter is getting tiring at this point. it is funny how in every blog or forum I keep seeing people post the lyrics to the same 8 year old song over and over again. It wasn't even one of his most popular songs! Stop talking out of your a** and educate yourself on him before you criticize him. If many of you were to be given some of his most complex lyrics you probably couldn't even tell me what they meant. The virginia tech forum is a forum about healing from violence and Nas is probably one of the most appropriate artists to perform in that context.

how many of you people have actually listens to a nas album and then think that you have the right to turn around and judge him.
thats like me whos grandfather has marks on his back from when white men whipped him and then looking at every white person and saying there just like the ones that whipped my grandfather.
i don't do that so why are you people prejudging nas here is 5 songs that he can play at Virginia tech.
