This is the reason I, a 2nd Amendment guy, have had to modify my stance on gun ownership somewhat in the last 20 or so years. Even in my short lifetime (55 years), I remember a day when sociopaths, violent neurotics, etc. were pretty much relegated to the worst parts of big cities, prisons and mental facilities. Now they are seemingly everywhere, as was well illustrated recently in the days following Jerry Falwell's death. Reading blogs like Pandagon, you'd think you had hooked up with a hotline into a detention center for dysfunctional 14-year-olds. Sure doesn't present a good case for their side...

OK westerburg, how do YOU suggest that self-defence be done? If a 200 lb karate expert with a baseball bat and murder on his mind comes at a 110 lb woman on crutches, would you deny her the use of a gun? I mean it, I want an answer!

A typical american myth is that america is the only country to offer rights of any kind to its citizens. It's like American invented rights or something...please.

Tell you what...a 110 ten pound woman ON CRUTCHES no less, aginst a 200 pound karate expert has no chance, even with a gun. Most likely the karate guy would take it and shoot her with it, which is what happens in reality. Espescailly, since no training at all is required to own a gun in many places, she'd probably leave it loaded and her three year old daughter would shoot herself with it, or bring it to school. Maybe she'd accidentely shoot herself while cleaning it, or maybe she'd use it to commit suicide. All of these scenarios are MUCH more likely than her actually even being confornted by this 200 pound monster of which you speak. And if there are literally milllions of people running around in the country afraid and ready to shoot this omnipresent bad guy, well I'd say that's a country with some serious problems.

But heck, I really wouldn't mind her having the gun if there were some reasonable procedures and rules for obtaining one.

They have not accidently killed themselves or others. They have not delibratly gone on killing sprees. Their guns have not jumped out of the drawer, loaded itself and started shooting. You have to be trained, licensed, registered and taxed to own and operate a motor vehicle, yet there are thousands of wrecks and deaths involving motor vehicles every year. There are even cases where a CAR was used as a MURDER WEAPON.

But you didn't answer the question anyway. You said in the other post (And paraphrased that comment above) that you don't want people to defend themselves with guns. So what's YOUR solution to being attacked?

I grew up and lived in America for 30 years, i have lived outside the country for nearly nine years now. I have no desire to move back.

Look up the stats, most gun deaths are results of suicide, and there are thousands of accidental deaths a year. My bet is the majority of incidences where guns are fired by people other than law enforcement officals have little if anything to do with self defence. People who have guns in their homes are much much more likely to be victims of gun violence or accidents than those who don't have guns. Look it up!

In most of the civilized world people don't even feel the need to defend themselves with guns. Why is this? Why are americans so afraid of each other? The question is not should we be allowed to carry guns, but what is wrong with a place where people feel such a violent need to possess one. But you don't want to talk about that do you?

I could pull a story from newspapers around the country of some nut job pulling a weapon and shooting innocent people EVERY DAY! Do you have any idea how many CHILDREN have been shot this year alone in a major city like Philadelphia. Look it up! I dare you. That's just ONE city!
