Christopher Hitchens Finds a Downside to Atheism
Christopher Hitchens has found a downside to the militant atheism he so loudly promotes: it doesn't allow for Jerry Falwell to go to hell.
Asked on CNN if he thought Falwell is in Heaven, Hitchens sneered:
No. And I think it's a pity there isn't a hell for him to go to.
The author God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything then launched into a tirade, calling Falwell a "little toad," a "horrible little person," and a "conscious charlatan and bully and fraud." He even accused the Reverend of not reading the Bible, and of being both anti-Semitic and excessively pro-Israel. Throw in a few four-letter words and Hitchens' comments would fit right in on a progressive discussion board.
Whatever else you might say about Jerry Falwell, he certainly did touch a nerve.

Christopher Hitchens: Sputtering with hatred. |

Caught a little of Hitchens' pathetic rant.
Sounded like he was stoned or drunk. His words were barely discernible. I rarely listen to atheists. They're a waste of protoplasm and cowards to boot.

I don't think atheists really don't believe in God. If that were the case, they'd just shrug off people who choose to be religious. Instead, they really really seem to hate religious people (and we will most likely see examples of it in this thread), and that suggests to me that they know God exists, and they just hate Him. Probably because God set up all these inconvenient rules that interfere with an atheist's desire for unlimited self-indulgence.
As I see it, an atheist only aspires to become a few kilograms of rotting meat at the end of life, and that's fine with me. Why can't it be fine with them that I aspire to ascend to a higher level of awareness and knowledge at the conclusion of this temporal life?

"Why can't it be fine with them that I aspire to ascend to a higher level of awareness and knowledge at the conclusion of this temporal life?"
I'm sure it is fine with them. What is not fine with them is that many of you cannot accept their beliefs as equal in value to yours. You have no proof, and neither do they.
"I rarely listen to atheists. They're a waste of protoplasm and cowards to boot."
Ahhhh, the tolerance of the religious right on full display. It is so nice to see that your own religion, which instructs you to show compassion for your fellow man, is held in such high regard by yourself that you blatantly ignore it's teachings. Are you really not aware of how stupid that statement makes you (and by extension your fellow believers) look?
Posted by: blubber at May 16, 2007 12:45 PM
But their beliefs are not equal to mine. I believe in something. They believe in nothing. Something > Nothing.
Meanwhile, The Gay Community Pays Its "Respects" to Falwell.

How brilliant! Another example: You believe in Satan and I dont. By your logic believing in Satan is superior to not believing in him. Satanism (including all the rituals) is better than Atheism?
Believing in the Toothfairy is superior to knowing that it is actually your Mom placing the money under your pillow?
No wonder you guys are screwing up so badly in every endeavour you undertake.
Posted by: blubber at May 16, 2007 1:16 PM
.....And believing in The Wiccan Earth Goddess Gaia is superior to believing in The Toothfairy? Does The Goddess Mommy Gaia put Carbon Credits under Blubber's Hemp Pillow? No wonder YOU GUYS are screwed up and look so absurd.

An Atheist should be considered a person with a dead soul. Believing in nothing but themselves makes them a moral coward.
As exampled by Christopher Hitchens, their only lot in life is the demeaning of others and contributing nothing to humanity but their vile temperament.
Posted by: pocomoco at May 16, 2007 1:52 PM
"An Atheist should be considered a person with a dead soul."
Why? Isn't that up to God to decide? Or are you claiming to be able to judge on His behalf?
Believing in nothing but themselves makes them a moral coward.
But they believe in plenty of things. They just dont believe that the one true God is the Christian God. Nor does the majority of the people on this planet. Buddhism has no God, Hinduism has many. Are these people dead souls as well? Clearly believing in the wrong Gods is no better than believeing in no God.
"their only lot in life is the demeaning of others"
Do you guys truly not realize how stupid that makes you look, when just one sentence before you claim "An Atheist should be considered a person with a dead soul. Believing in nothing but themselves makes them a moral coward."?

Did you stop taking your medication prior to posting? An Atheist does not believe in gods or godesses. I don't even know what you are trying to say or how it is related to the topic of atheism.
Posted by: blubber at May 16, 2007 2:38 PM
You can judge a belief system by its fruits. My belief system results in stable family, healthy life, and human decency.
The fruits of atheism appear to be snide, bitter comments directed at people who aren't atheists.

Look, a person without faith can no more understand religion than a deaf person can understand music.

blubber
Having found it difficult to understand your ramblings, I offer the following:
The primary difference between theists and atheists is who commands their belief system.
The belief in a supreme being, no matter what the religion, rules the theist, while belief in themselves rules the atheist.
Like Hitchens, atheists are intellectual snobs who will not be ruled by anyone other than themselves. That’s all well and good until they take it to the next step into the intolerance of others.
Why they find it necessary to take that next step is beyond explanation unless it is a pure and simple case of jealousy.

Christians are instructed to have compassion on their "neighbor". "Neighbor" or "brother" qualifies as someone who acknowledges the Lord's existence...not some lump of flesh that's so far gone they can't even give a nod to their Creator. Even James (2:19) said that believing in God is a no-brainer. He said that even the demons are smart enough to acknowledge that God exists.
So in fact "blubber" (name suits you well), far from having failed to acknowledge the teachings of Christ, I know them quite well...and live them. Would suggest that you put a sock in it until you know what you're talking about.
Posted by: fellowes at May 16, 2007 9:18 PM
As far as compassion goes, I think it obligates us to be tolerant of others (to the degree that they are tolerant of us), and to extend charity to those in need regardless of whether they share our faith.
Human beings have a spiritual component. When people don't fill this component with an understanding of the true Lord and Creator, they are prone to fill it with nonsense like politics and environmental extremism. Neither of these suffices to fill the spiritual void, and so those attempting to make do with cheap, temporal substitutions are prone to become ever more bitter and fanatical.
Atheists deny that this spiritual component even exists. But I think they are subconsciously aware that it does, and that's why they are so often prone to expressions of contempt for those who are finding spiritual fulfillment. There is resentment that religious folk have found Something of Great Value that eludes them.
As someone once wrote, "It's not that Christianity has been tried and found wanting, it's that Christianity has been found hard, and left untried."

Ok Blubber, I'll custom tailor my previous comment just for The Atheist in you: .....And believing in The Non-existance of any God or Goddess or Divine Entity is superior to believing in The Toothfairy? Does The The Non-existant God or Goddess or Divine Entity put Carbon Credits under Blubber's Hemp Pillow? No wonder Blubber is screwed up and looks so absurd. There, Is that better for our Token Troll Atheistic Bluuber?
Hey, wasn't Hitler an "Atheist"?

"Christians are instructed to have compassion on their "neighbor". "Neighbor" or "brother" qualifies as someone who acknowledges the Lord's existence...not some lump of flesh that's so far gone they can't even give a nod to their Creator."
Really? So that explains why you guys feel it is okay to own slaves and decimate the population of entire continents. Those were only lumps of flesh you were exterminating, so no need to feel any regrets or compassion. Nice religion you got there, buddy!
And because Hindus, Budhhist and many others do not believe in your Creator, are you telling me that these are also "lumps of flesh" not worthy of compassion?
Posted by: blubber at May 17, 2007 9:59 AM
VtK, you really predicted it right back when you said "Instead, they really really seem to hate religious people (and we will most likely see examples of it in this thread)". Indeed we have.

"And believing in The Non-existance of any God or Goddess or Divine Entity is superior to believing in The Toothfairy?"
Obviously it is. People that believe in the toothfairy will also believe that W. is a great leader, or that the troop surge will work, or that the islamic hordes are about to overrun us. People that do not believe in God will usually take a rational (not faith-based) approach to an issue.
You can believe in God and be rational, but that means that you need to accept the *possibility* that you may not be right or at least have not interpreted Gods teachings correctly. The fact that Islam and Christianity believe in the same God shows you how different that interpretation can be.

"My belief system results in stable family, healthy life, and human decency. "
Oh really? So during the middle ages (the dark ages) when Christianity had its strongest grip on Europe, you are telling me that those were the good days? Serfdom, slavery, inequality, illiteracy...these are things we should aspire to?
Do you think the US is a Christian nation?
Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 10:14 AM
"Instead, they really really seem to hate religious people (and we will most likely see examples of it in this thread)". Indeed we have.
Yes, by Christians calling other human beings "lumps of flesh", not worthy of compassion. That, my friend, is hatred.

"Human beings have a spiritual component. When people don't fill this component with an understanding of the true Lord and Creator, they are prone to fill it with nonsense like politics and environmental extremism."
And you are the judge as to who is the true Lord?
And also: Politics is nonsense? So what is any Christian doing in our government then?
Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 10:22 AM
Blubber and friends ALWAYS bring up SLAVERY and the DARK AGES to argue against people of the TWENTY FIRST CENTURY.
And you said:
"Really? So that explains why you guys feel it is okay to own slaves and decimate the population of entire continents."
OK, just WHAT CHRISTIAN said that? MUSLIMS still practice slavery, Are THEY the ones you are talking about? Are you going to organize a PUBLIC PROTEST against MUSLIMS?
And "decimate the population of entire continents"????!!! HOLY S**T!! That's pretty damn ambitious! Oh wait, you must be thinking of that GLOBAL WARMING advocate who say that the Earth's population must be reduced by 80%! Or maybe you are (again) talking about MUSLIMS who are not at all timid about calling for the elimination of ANYONE (Including YOU) who does not think, act, dress, speak and WORSHIP, EXACTLY like themselves.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 17, 2007 11:02 AM
"OK, just WHAT CHRISTIAN said that?"
Did our founding fathers own slaves? Where they Christians?
Posted by: blubber at May 17, 2007 11:05 AM
"And "decimate the population of entire continents"????!!! HOLY S**T!! That's pretty damn ambitious!"
How many Native Americans lived on this continent before we arrived? How many are left now?
Posted by: blubber at May 17, 2007 11:07 AM
Blubber, I don't believe in the ToothFairy and I belive W should be Impeached for not securing the border. Why do you choose to ignore The IslamoFascists that time and time again have vowed to kill as many Americans as possible? So just how are Christianity and Islam the same? Today I see not any Christian Iman ordering his followers to strap bombs to themselves and kill as many innocent as possible. I think you need to reconsider your Atheisim, perhaps since you despise Christianity and America so much you'd be better serving your true beliefs in The Jihad with a Koran in one hand and an AK47 aimed at those surging troops in the other. Oh and those Indians that were here before Columbus, they were killing each other too and would probably still be if this continent were left untouched, I'm sure the "few" that are left enjoy their Casinos and nice Reservations they have.
Posted by: Bryherb at May 17, 2007 12:56 PM
"I think you need to reconsider your Atheisim"
I'm not an Atheist.
"Oh and those Indians that were here before Columbus, they were killing each other too and would probably still be if this continent were left untouched, I'm sure the "few" that are left enjoy their Casinos and nice Reservations they have."
Well I guess then we can forget remembering the Holocaust as well. Those Jews were fighting wars before too. And then ones that were left are doing just fine.
Just so you get an understanding of the magnitude of what happened to those lucky "Indians": There were an estimated 40 to 120 million before we arrived, which we reduced to a few hundred thousand at one point. Somewhere between 40 to 120 million dead.
"And "decimate the population of entire continents"????!!! HOLY S**T!! That's pretty damn ambitious!"
I guess they were just lumps of flesh, so they aren't really "population" - right?
Posted by: blubber at May 17, 2007 2:13 PM
"I'm not an Atheist."
Well then it should be an easy step for you to become an American Hating Jihadist since you already have 90% of the indoctrination ingrained in you.
"Well I guess then we can forget remembering the Holocaust as well. Those Jews were fighting wars before too. And then ones that were left are doing just fine"
I did not know that The Jews were fighting a war amongst themselves as long as The Indians were. Apples and Oranges and a very bad knee jerk comparison. So was there a census buraeu that collected those population stats of The Indians you cite with such confidence?
C'mon Blubber, enlist in The Jihad, don't be an American Hating ChickenDove MoonBat alone on the Web. Be like Johnny Taliban and Adam Ghadan.

"I did not know that The Jews were fighting a war amongst themselves as long as The Indians were. Apples and Oranges and a very bad knee jerk comparison."
Wait, are you saying that the extermination of Native Americans is not worth remembering? Or that it is not as great a tragedy as that of the Jews?
Or are you saying that any group of people that fought amongst each other can be exterminated at will?

My, my. I return from my evening shift work and look what I find.
Hey "blubber" (this was the best name you could think of for yourself?), apparently reading isn't your forte (no surprise there).
I wrote of those who don't acknowledge their Creator. Those are atheists...not deists. Most people on this planet are smart enough to acknowledge SOME creator are they not? I'll write this slowly so you'll catch it: atheists are a waste of protoplasm, not 99% of the population who acknowledge a God. Got it now? And YOU are no judge of what is Christian and what isn't since you're NOT a Christian.
Posted by: fellowes at May 17, 2007 9:08 PM
"I believe the time has come to give blubber/anonymous a rest. When a poster has nothing more to contribute than clichéd/historical commentary I think the thread has run its course."
I think more accurately: When the responses from "your team" become embarrassingly full of logical errors, lack of knowledge and hateful racism, it is better to get them to stop posting.
Please point out the historical commentary that is not relavant to the statement "My religion leads to human decency". By the way, the Germans in WW2 were Christians too.
Posted by: blubber at May 18, 2007 7:44 AM
"And YOU are no judge of what is Christian and what isn't since you're NOT a Christian."
In other words: "You are no judge as to whether I'm an alcoholic or not, since you aren't one." That's your logic in life? How dumb are you???
And when did I say that I am not a Christian?
"Most people on this planet are smart enough to acknowledge SOME creator are they not?"
Like the roughly 500 million Buddhists? They do not acknowledge a creator. Those are a waste of protoplasm? Your lack of knowledge seems inversly proportional to the amount of hate you spew. A common problem with ultra conservatives.
Posted by: Anonymous at May 18, 2007 8:02 AM
"Your lack of knowledge seems inversly proportional to the amount of hate you spew."
Correction: The amount of knowledge you have seems inversly proportional to the amount of hate you spew. Not that most of you would have caught the error anyways.
Posted by: blubber at May 18, 2007 8:08 AM
Yeah, was waiting for you to mention the Buddhists. They're a waste too...just like you blubber. I work with a "buddhist nun". She's so full of crap she hardly knows what planet she's on. She confuses her video game playing and its characters with real life so often that she blends both subjects into the same sentence...as though the video game characters were breathing and walking. A good example of how screwed up people get when they embrace "philosophies" instead of reality. I expect the men in white coats will be coming for you too.
Posted by: fellowes at May 18, 2007 11:00 AM
"I work with a "buddhist nun". She's so full of crap she hardly knows what planet she's on."
I guess if one Buddhist you know is full of crap, all 500 million of them must be.
Does the same logic apply to Christians as well?
But at least your are honest about your hateful views towards others. I am just sad that you feel that this makes you a good Christian.
Pocomoco: Is this why you wanted your buddies to stop posting?
