Texas Town to Criminalize a Word

The weird hysteria surrounding the "N-word" continues to escalate. Ken Corley, Mayor of Brazoria, Texas, wants to make speaking the word a crime punishable by a fine of up to $500.

As far as Corley is concerned, this is only the beginning:

I would like to, if possible, ban all racial slurs. We chose this word because it's the most controversial issue throughout the United States today.

Presumably other incorrect words will also be banned, "but we want to take this one step at a time, depending on public opinion."

Corley describes himself as a "middle-class white boy." Considering that the term "white boy" is derogatory, maybe the next step should be for him to have himself arrested for racism.

After all racial slurs have been banned, bureaucrats might move on to criminalizing objectionable phrases like "lower taxes" and "First Amendment."

On a tip from Wiggins.

Chris Baker at AM 740 KTRH had Corley on his show a couple of days ago. The Mayor is an incoherent mess.

Good, That means they can arrest and throw in the clink ALL Hip Hop Rappers who use that "derogatory N-word" in their lyrics. What a great idea! arrest all Hip Hop Thugs BEFORE they commit drive by shootings and hold up convenient stores. Mayor Corley needs to also describe himself as one who suffers from "Caucasian Guilt". So since there is no more violent crime from Illegal Ailiens and otherwise in his nice little Texas burg and he can turn his efforts to solving the real problems. After that he should become Mayor of New Orleans and fix things up there.

I'm sure the next step for this moonbat is to read all the books in the Brazoria Library to make sure that there are no "racial slurs" in their content.
He could set those books aside and when Brazoria has it's homecoming start the tradition of a book burning bonfire, Nazi style.
I wonder if he will also ban the favorite Texas slur, "dumass".

"But all I said was 'That piece of Halibut was good enough for Jehovah'--"

"He said it again, he said it again!"

...using the word in an offensive fashion...

Which is where the problem lies. Will they have a new City position of Clairvoyant, or use another means to tell when the depths of dislike pass that magic line to full fledged 'hate'.

They may as well pass a law making it illegal to think negatively of a person of color. Enforcement would entail the same guesswork.

America's creeping totalitarianism draws nearer. The Founders warned us not to try to achieve perfect, total equality because it isn't possible in an imperfect, unequal world. The ONLY way to attempt perfect equality is through tyranny.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of thier consciences." - C.S. Lewis

P.S. How do you quote someone in your posts here?

The mayor said the "n" word was the most controversial issue... What makes him think that? I can think of many issues more controversial than that.

Chris -
Brazoria is a little hole (and I mean HOLE) about 30 miles south of Houston, sitting in the shadows of an industrial petro/chemical jungle. Living in a place like that, you'd do darn near anything to make life more bearable - including lighting inscense (which is what this law amounts to). And you are correct, they have lots and lots of real issues that need their attention.

AND FYI - here's a link to html codes: http://www.web-source.net/html_codes_chart.htm

It comes in pretty handy, even though I hardly ever use anything but bold and italics.
:-)

Thank you kindly. I can see what you are saying about Brazoria, but looking at it on a map it appears to be a sizable community to me. In any case, it is so frightening to me because it isn't just Brazoria, this is an ongoing project across the nation, and it is Orwellian and tyrannical.

I assure you, Mr. Mayor, the "n" word is far from being the most controversial or pressing issue in the U.S.A. today. How about all those illegals in your community? How about the Islamic clerics preaching hatred to cheering crowds? How about the spread of socialism? I rather think most people find these issues a little more pressing.

I read about this the other day. The mayor said that saying it would be allowed if you use it as a term of endearment. This means that African Americans who choose to say this to eachother will be exempt.

And yes, this IS the most controversial issue throughout the United States today. It's all people are talking about all the time!! On the subways, on talk radio, everywhere! Heck, the state of the union speach was about nothing but that! I'm glad Corley is focused on the relevant issues of the day.

Nude, I read your post and all I can think to say is HUH?? The state of the union speech was about the "n" word?? The "n" word is more important than the myriad other problems? You are GLAD that he is doing this?? Pretty scary.

Will they ban the use of the word cracker as well? Or hymie? Or pig (seeing as Muslims consider the pig to be unclean)? The possibilities are endless! Soon we will not be able to see anything.

Make that "say" anything.

Posted by: Pam at January 25, 2007 4:04 PM

Van, I move that you maintain a list of "banned" words on your website, plainly visible on all pages.

Plus, it will result in some interesting search queries.

I've got a list I kept from another (now defunked) blog called TongueTied. Each word has been, at one time or another, called hateful or racist in its usage. Please note that none of the words alone, is a slur (thus you won't see a word like 'nigger' on the list):

So they want to ban a word, sort of reminds you of that bit in the film Life of Brian, where they banned the use of the word Jehovah
