Is Chavez the Western Hemisphere's Pol Pot?

Hugo Chavez has delighted American liberals by loudly denouncing the USA at every opportunity, ostentatiously cuddling up to our enemies, and giving every indication of doing to Venezuela what their hero Fidel Castro did to Cuba. But maybe Castro isn't Chavez's primary role model. He could be following in the footsteps of Pol Pot.
Pol Pot's communist Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia when Democrats forced the abandonment of Southeast Asia, just as they now want to do regarding Iraq. He took social engineering to extremes that would give even Shrillary pause, emptying cities and resettling everyone in the countryside in an effort to stamp out all remnants of capitalism and political resistance. All government was by fanatical thugs.
One third of the Cambodian population was killed by the regime.
Chavez appears to have similar massive social engineering projects planned for Venezuela. He plans to build "socialist cities" run by "people power" — brand new egalitarian cities carved out of the jungle, which will not have mayors or municipal governments that might compromise the totalitarian control that appears to be within Chavez's reach.
According to political scientist Carlos Raul Hernandez:
Chavez's plan is to introduce a system similar to Pol Pot. When Chavez talks about people power, he means doing away with elected institutions and replacing them with groups of fanatics.
Like the Muslims who repeatedly promise to destroy our civilization, Chavez is at least upfront about his objectives:

Regimes based on the evil ideology developed by Marx and Lenin killed over 100 million of their own citizens in the course of the 20th century.
The horrific disease that is socialism suffered a setback when the Soviet Union collapsed, but it has not yet been cured — and now it is spreading among our Western Hemisphere neighbors, in a wicked alliance with our Islamic enemies. Meanwhile, the media asks us to worry about global warming.
