I can only assume that the reference to Sikhs was thrown in to diffuse the statement. Every Sikh I have known has carried a dagger embroidered on a piece of cloth, hidden away from view, to fulfil their religious requirement.

I take my hat off to the town council of Herouville. It is high time that people who immigrate to this country learn to adapt to the laws and customes of this land, at least in public. If they do not like living as Canadians, nobody stops them from taking an airplane for the trip back "Home"

Everyone here seems to have some good ideas. Assimilation, the true melting pot. Losing significant cultural differences and markers of personal identity. I just have a few issues with Herouxville's declaration. Allowing Christmas Carols seems a little much, wouldn't you all agree. Praising a deity's birthday in a time when our schools teach science and biology as they state in their declaration of norms. Also this whole day of worship thing. Christians on Sunday, Muslims on Friday, Jews on Saturday and who knows what else for other religions. Let's clean that up shall we, one particular day should be set aside (perhaps Monday, nobody likes it, might as well change its image)and everyone can restrict their worship to that day. If anyone wishes to carry a ceremonial dagger, wear a yarmulkah, carry rosary beads can do so on this day. Eventually we won't have to worry about so many diverse religions and ethnicities but for now this will have to do. Hats off to you Herouxville, you've definitely got it going on.

Unlike any of you that have posted here, I actually live 45 minutes away from Herouxville. I LOUDLY applaud this very small city's decision to have a code of ethic and conduct for immigrants. It's about time someone in this country had the balls to do so..... I'm happy to announce that 5 other municipalities in Quebec are voting on the same resolution... GOD bless them!!!

Its a small step but it is a step .Europe has been closing the doors on immigration , hopefully Canada will also .

Wow, I didn't think that there were soo many ignorant people in this country...but I guess I was wrong. One of the great things about canada is its ethnic diversity. We are such a beautiful nation because we are not racist and we enjoy living in a multicultural and accepting country. Do you honestly think that women will be stoned in public, or burned alive at the stake...have you ever been anywhere outside of Canada! These standards that were created by the town of Herouxville are actually amusing in that they really think that immigrants will act in this mannor. I live in Quebec, I go to school with a great number of immigrants. Here's something that may surprise you; they are just like you and me! So, maybe we should all take a class on world views and stop looking at immigrants as some sort of eye sore in our country and accept that a part of being human is the love of all man kind. Put yourself in the shoes of a refugee. If you wanted to escape to Canada to be free from injustice or war, wouldn't you like to be accepted into the greatest country on Earth...I thought you might.

I see nothing wrong with this declaration.

I believe the reason most immigrants are here is because they were searching for a better life than what they had in thier country of birth. I find it interesting that many of them try to change this country to make it more like the one they left behind. An example of this is the muslim community trying to bring Sharia Law into this country.

My question is this. If it was so great in their country why did they leave in the first place?

I applaud this town for having the guts to stand up for our way of life. If you are going to immigrate to Canada you can enjoy the rights and freedoms offered, but you should be embracing Canadian culture instead of trying to change it.

The people and town council of Herouxville need to get over their 'hick town' french Quebecer attitude and realize that the world is changing very rapidly and they had better 'get aboard' or they and their 'culture' will soon perish.
My mother's family has lived in that province since they immigrated there from France in 1646.
In my view, Herouxville, Quebec is an embarrassment to every Canadian.

Why shouldn't Herouxville's town council have a say as to what the population of the town expects from the conduct of newcommers?

The sad reality is that only politicians of a small town will dare speak their minds.

The large majority of immigrants to America have been happy to accept and belong to a place of their choosing. They also made a choice of loyalty.

Not so with those who cherish tribal,etnic, and religious loyalty at the expense of the host country that took them in. They want to impose their way of life onto the hosts. And if that is not enough, they also bring their troubles and hatred with them. And the militancy.

It seems to me there is a HITLER element in the bigot town of Herouxville. I agree that women should not be stoned or have acid poured on them, they also should be able to say and do what they want within the canadian law, which includes to practice their religion and wear a hat, headband, scarf, headcovering (whatever!!...) And men and women would be better off not drinking alcohol, because there are so many damm alcoholics around; 1/2 of all fatal accidents and most of home violence is caused by those idiots. Also, did you know that Christmas and Christmas traditions actually go back to pagan rituals and some very cruel ones (for example children at one time were not given any presents, but were given away as presents for very sinister practices). And take a look at the catholic church: priests molesting boys, worshipping statutes etc.etc.etc. Did you also know that the catholic church collaborated with Hitler and his helpers; there are more bigots in that church and anywhere else. By the way I am from Germany (was born after the war), left the catholic church many moons ago and right now do not belong to any religious organization or belief!

I applaud Herouxville for taking a stand in preserving Canadian values. I’m an immigrant to this country and became a citizen 17 years ago. I came to Canada 22 years ago; I came here by my own free will, but I always knew and wanted more than anything else to adapt to the culture and set of values of my new home. It is ridiculous the way the Liberal and NDP parties have given in to the demands of a lot of people who only came to take from Canada and it is yet to be seen what they are going to give back to his wonderful country that gave them shelter. We, the Christians also have the right to say Merry Christmas just like they have the right to walk around wearing their headscarves and the traditional clothing for men. I went with my family to visit Quebec City and it was a breath of fresh air. I salute you people of Herouxville for having the courage to stand up and defend the values that we all treasured but that most people feel that is not politically correct to defend. Hats off to Herouxville!

Really sad but look where it's happening, in the most racist part of the country. It surprises me non, these people are so isolated and disconnected they could be considered a cult. I don't think this issue will really have any long term effects reason being, there isn't to many of these inbred villages remaining in any state of viability and thus will not be able to carry this stupidity on. These morons learn by osmossis, their loyalties are not broad, their world is tiny, let them be as they are and they will soon pass. It is without doubt this group is struggling to cling to something that cannot survive on its own, it has to be protected just as is the Province.
