Dems Go After the Idiot Vote

In a move likely to tighten the Democratic Party's death grip on New Jersey, the state may remove the politically incorrect word "idiot" from its constitution so that mental defectives won't be barred from voting.

The Garden State's constitution states that "no idiot or insane person should enjoy the right of suffrage" — obviously bad news for Dems, were it to be enforced. They want to change the language to some gobbledegook that may as well just be deleted.

Crowed State Senate President Richard Codey:

This is another big step toward removing the stigma of mental illness.

Now back to getting the vote for felons.

Codey is a Democrat — surprised?

On a tip from Bill V.

Junior and Snooze Alarm immediately move to NJ so they can vote... and marry.

Mental illness is a stigma? Yeah, right. The 9-11 truthers and the Daily Kostards seem to be getting along just fine. It's the normal, well-adjusted working people in this country who are stigmatized.

This is perfectly related to the discussion I have been having with Pam who posts here. The Founders knew this could happen-that's why they created a system where voting was restricted. They kept the incopetent masses at arm's length. They knew unscrupulous politicians would be able to manipulate them into believing that they were giving them more and more "voice" in the system and promising more and more "rights" to them even as they steadily weakened the institution to the point of rendering it useless. There will be no end to this.

Well said, Chris. The Founders knew the pitfalls of unbridled democracy and deliberately sought to limit it. That's why only the House was to be filled by general election, while the Senate, before the awful 17th amendment, was elected by the state house members. Even the president was elected by the electoral college, rather than directly by the people. But alas, our once limited consitutional republic has degenerated into direct democracy.

The reason why this law has never been enforced is because it is inherently unfair to deny idiots the vote while allowing so many of them to run for public office.

Allowing anyone and everyone to vote is not what the Founders had in mind. "A vote is like a rifle, it's usefullness depends upon the character of the user"-Teddy Roosevelt.

I would like to see the Senate once again elected by the state legislatures. Anymore, it is just the House with longer terms. Really, what's the point if both houses are elected by the people?

Given the power the Senate has (judges, treaties, etc), does it really belong in the hands of the people.

Steve, there is growing awareness that that is what is a major problem; there is a movement to repeal the 17th amendment-the one that allowed elections of Senators. It definately needs to be repealed, it took so many rights and control away from the States. It then concentrated them in Washington, DC, the last place it needed to be. Check this out Steve: http://repealthe17thamendment.blogspot.com and read the Recommended Reading sections on the right hand side of the screen-loads of good info.

Steve,

I would like to see the Senate once again elected by the state legislatures.

Ack! I live in California. Letting the electorate choose Senators is bad enough, what with Boxer (spit) and Feinstein. God help us if the legislature chose Senators. California would end up (at ease, San Franciscans) with Hugo Chavez and Kim Jong-Il as its Senators.
