Ungracious in Victory

To get an idea of what Dems would have inflicted upon our democracy if they hadn't carried the midterm elections, have a look at Florida's 13th Congressional District, which lies between Tampa and Fort Myers. There Republican Vern Buchanan narrowly won — so liberals are trying to overturn the election.

There have been two recounts, as demanded by Dems. These increased Buchanan's margin of victory. So now hard-left activists People for the American Way and the execrable ACLU are pretending that those who "undervoted" by not voting in this particular race wanted to cast a ballot for Buchanan's Dem opponent Christine Jennings, but were prevented by defective voting machines.

Undervoting is common in the district, and was probably increased by a particularly nasty campaign. Demographics make it likely that if forced to choose, most of those who didn't vote would have gone with Buchanan. A thorough auditing process has produced no evidence that the machines malfunctioned.

Yet Nancy Pelosi is treating Jennings as if she won. Close is good enough, according to the inappropriately named Democratic Party. Dems would settle for throwing the election out and starting over, in hopes of getting the results they want next time. But what they really want is still more appalling: they are asking a court to declare Jennings the winner based on statistical models they concocted that supposedly prove that if those who didn't vote had voted, Jennings would have won. You know, like the statistical models that prove the planet is going to burn up if we don't radically increase regulation and jack taxes through the ceiling.

Democracy only works if we all believe in it, and if all sides are willing to abide by the results of elections. It increasingly appears that Democrats only believe in democracy when they win.

On a tip from Varla.

How totally typical of the 'Rats. They're worse than high school bullies who don't get their way. Feed them fish heads and rice, if you'll pardon the insensitivity...

Well, I agree that the left wing is fascist, but so is democracy. America is not a democracy (OK it is now, but it wasn't intended to be). The Founding Fathers had no love for democracy, they gave us a Republic.

Don't forget they tried this statistical chicanery with the Census the last time around, too.

It is not the Democratic party but the Democrat party. You don't call the Republican party the Republicanic party do you? You are right though in that there is nothing democratic about them.

Titan, "republican" is both a noun applicable to those that support the principles of republicanism or the Republican party, and an adjective. The party's proper name is the "Republican Party." As in "that republican over there votes a straight Republican ticket because he's in the Republican Party, and supports republican ideas." A "democrat" is an individual that supports the principles of individual-based democracy, but "democrat" does not double as an adjective. The party's proper name is the "Democratic Party." As in "that democrat over there votes a straight Democratic ticket because he's in the Democratic Party, and supports democratic ideas." Whether or not there is anything democratic about them, we ought to at least get the names of the parties right if we're going to have serious discussions about the problems in this country and how to fix them.

By the way, this is not just a rep v dem fight. There are Republicans calling for a revote. Even REC members in Sarasota are calling for a revote. And some Dems want Jennings to concede and get this over with. Its not a party line divide. Nobody really thinks the numbers are right, though. Most folks just want to be done with it all.
