Thuggish Senators Manufacturing Consent on Global Warming

Liberal Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Olympia Snowe (RINO-ME) have sent a menacing letter to ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson, reading in essence, Stop disputing the politically correct line on global warming or we'll break your kneecaps.

The letter accuses ExxonMobil of "information laundering" for supporting think tanks skeptical of global warming hysteria. A few lowlights:

[W]e must request that ExxonMobil end any further financial assistance or other support to groups or individuals whose public advocacy has contributed to the small, but unfortunately effective, climate change denial myth. [...] We would recommend that ExxonMobil publicly acknowledge both the reality of climate change and the role of humans in causing or exacerbating it. Second, ExxonMobil should repudiate its climate change denial campaign and make public its funding history. Finally, we believe that there would be a benefit to the United States if one of the world's largest carbon emitters headquartered here devoted at least some of the money it has invested in climate change denial pseudo-science to global remediation efforts. We believe this would be especially important in the developing world, where the disastrous effects of global climate change are likely to have their most immediate and calamitous impacts.

In other words, stop funding research that undermines our ideology. Oh, and we want you to help finance our global warming crusade.

Rockefeller and Snowe know better than to spell out the implicit "or else," but a reference to the tobacco industry makes clear that they are spoiling to inflict serious damage. Unlike the tobacco industry, the energy industry is absolutely critical to our economy. If liberal thugs cripple it in the name of their latest environmental jihad, the economic consequences will be serious in the extreme.

As OpinionJournal notes, ExxonMobil is doing the world a service by helping finance groups like the Competitive Enterprise Institute:

Every dogma has its day, and we've lived long enough to see more than one "consensus" blown apart within a few years of "everyone knowing" it was true. In recent decades environmentalists have been wrong about almost every other apocalyptic claim they've made: global famine, overpopulation, natural resource exhaustion, the evils of pesticides, global cooling, and so on. Perhaps it's useful to have a few folks outside the "consensus" asking questions before we commit several trillion dollars to any problem.

Ironically, Rockefeller owes his Senate seat to the fortune he inherited, which was amassed by Standard Oil.

Comments

These are the same Senate thugs who threatened to pull ABC's broadcast license for daring to criticize the Clinton Administration in The Path to 9-11. The same Senate thugs who decided to silence free political speech with McCain-Feingold.

The elite ruling class simply can not brook any criticism from the peasants.

God,

I wanna vomit. So, there can't be any criticism of Anthropogenic Global Warming, eh? While I think GW is happening, its a naturally occuring cycle that has nothing to do with Mankind and the 'Evils of Oil' or some such nonsense. GW would also be the best thing for the planet, since it means longer growing seasons.

Guess Rockefeller and Snowe forgot to give their little 're-ducation' memo to the Centers for Disease Control's Dr. Paul Reiter.

Where are all the liberal conspiracy theorists? The ones who constantly remind us how evil the government is and that it's trying to control innocent Americans? I'm kidding; I never really believed they stood on principal. But that’s exactly whats happening here, Exxon is being blackmailed.

I am terminally tired of all this global warming madness.

We are victims of a hoax, a chicken-little scam driven by political opportunism. The Jihadists perpetuate the 'Israeli devils' evil threat from 'out there' in classic Hitlerian style. The Gaiaists take it a step farther to 'the enemy is us' a la Pogo. So now the sickly green Al Gore presses his bloat upon us, and indeed worldwide, in the name of planetary salvation and, of course, a shot at the 2008 presidential nomination.

If this isn't misuse of government office I don't know what is. This should be a felony.

Senators Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee:

It's called "Solar Warming," but it appears you don't really care to take the time to read history or study astronomy, you simply wish to impose your idiotic beliefs upon all the rest of us (the "great unwashed") via your Stalinist tactics.

Global warming? Hey, I could use a little of that tonight, Senators, so send some my way (20 degrees overnight).

Please go away and leave the rest of us alone (and take algore with you). Mars is nice this time of year . . .

Buh-bye!

A modest proposal to help wit global warming: just get liberal Congressmen to stop producing CO2.

We can help with this, if necessary.
