Why Google Doesn't Acknowledge Veterans Day

Regarding Google's unwillingness to acknowledge Veterans Day, the 100% blue company has issued a form letter to stave off angry customers. Via WorldNetDaily:

Thank you for your note. We understand your concern and interest in seeing a Veteran's (sic) Day Google logo. If we were to commemorate this holiday, we'd want to express reverence; however, as Google's special logos tend to be lighthearted in nature, this would be a particularly challenging design. We wouldn't want to create a graphic that could be interpreted as disrespectful in any way.

I believe this explanation holds for Memorial Day and September 11 too.

However, it does not seem to hold for Remembrance Day. Maybe Canada's version of Veterans Day just isn't as solemn. Here's the logo they've used:

Poppies are associated with Remembrance Day — just as American flags are associated with some of the days Google doesn't choose to acknowledge. Maybe a flag theme would be too jingoistic — though they use flag themes on the Fourth of July, when they can be more "lighthearted."

On tips from The Right Reverend Rabbi Judah and nanc.
