Robert Byrd in Line For Presidency
Posted by Dave Blount at November 15, 2006 11:44 AM
Scary as it is to think of San Francisco liberal Nancy Pelosi in line for the presidency after Vice President Cheney, her own backup isn't much better. Senator Robert "Sheets" Byrd has been named President Pro Tempore, meaning that when the new Congress is sworn in, he will be next in line after Pelosi.
Byrd is proudly known as the King of Pork:
They call me "The Pork King," they don't know how much I enjoy it.
His rhetorical gifts produced this famous quote:
I should rather die a thousand times and see old glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again than see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen of the wilds.
As a Kleagle, Byrd was responsible for recruiting new KKK members. This may explain his reflexive and unyielding opposition to all black nominees, including Thurgood Marshall, Clarence Thomas, and Condoleezza Rice.
Also reflexive is his opposition to American military efforts associated with Republicans, though he is quite the hawk when fellow Dems initiate the action. Discover the Networks reports:
Byrd voted for the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and wholeheartedly supported his mentor President Johnson during the Vietnam War. "I was the last one that ran out of Vietnam," he remembered years later. "I supported President Johnson to the end." By contrast, Byrd did not support most of President Reagan's military initiatives; he voted against fighting Communist insurgents in Central America, and against the Strategic Defense Initiative for a missile defense system. His distaste for Republican-led military action continued during the administration of President George H.W. Bush (1989-1993), when, in 1990, he voted against authorizing the use of force against Iraq in what would become known as the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Yet during the presidency of fellow Democrat Bill Clinton, Byrd voted for the use of American military force in Haiti, Bosnia, and Kosovo.
Sheets opposed removing Saddam Hussein from power, despite having this to say:
We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons.
Here's wishing the President and Vice President the very best of health.
