New York Times Blames Air America Bankruptcy on Corporate Conspiracy

Posted by Dave Blount at November 6, 2006 2:56 PM

After hyping Air America at every opportunity, the New York Times all but refused to report on the Gloria Wise scandal, which involved the liberal radio network stealing from a Bronx charity in the Gray Lady's backyard. Now that Air Un-American has been forced to declare bankruptcy, the Times comes forward with the only possible explanation: it's the work of a vast right-wing conspiracy.

Hold onto your tinfoil hats:

When the liberal talk radio network Air America filed for bankruptcy protection last month, some analysts blamed a lack of listener interest in progressive talk radio. Now, it seems that a lack of major advertising dollars are responsible.

Could it be that the advertising dollars where lacking because hardly anyone ever listened to Air America? Of course not: that's what the conspirators want you to think. In reality, or rather, in the NY Times' politically corrected alternative to reality, Err America is going belly-up because it was "blacked out" by a sinister cabal of advertisers that includes Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, Visa, Exxon Mobil, Cingular, McDonald's, the United States Postal Service, and even the United States Navy.

These advertisers reportedly had purchased advertising time on ABC, but did not want to air on any Unfair America affiliates. The Times admits that advertising blackouts are a common response to tasteless radio programming. However:

But the advertisers' avoidance of Air America's liberal programming seems pointed when contrasted with the commercial success of right-wing talk radio programs like those of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

Is it that neither Rush nor Sean Hannity is likely to half-jokingly call for the President's assassination? Or is it that the VRWC's tentacles reach deep into the black festering heart of Corporate America? Don't bother thinking about it — the Gray Lady has already made up your mind for you.
