Age Discrimination Laws Offer Jackpot Justice

The Left has come another step closer to its nightmarish objective of absolute equality as new age-discrimination laws go into effect in Britain. Lawyers will be happy too, as the laws promise a bonanza of lawsuits.

It is now illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of age regarding hiring, promotion, firing, or even retirement. The regulations apply to the young as well as the old — after all, we are all equal and interchangeable! — so that suits can be expected if older workers are paid more than younger ones. Some worry that even asking job applicants how much experience they have or how old they are could land them in court.

As if to discourage employers from hiring anyone at all, the regulations force them to produce positive proof that they did not discriminate. There are no caps on the jackpots for those who sue and their lawyers.

The laws are vague, so it will be up to courts to determine just what constitutes age discrimination. Some cases might end up being appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. Sensible interpretations are unlikely.

As with most moonbattery alleged to benefit workers, it is workers who are made to suffer. Employers are already cutting back on benefits to long-term employees, so they can't be sued for not giving the same benefits to everyone else.
