One Small Step Toward the Tower of Babel
Posted by Dave Blount at July 3, 2006 10:23 AM
Moonbats' struggle to impose a balkanized Tower of Babel in place of the American melting pot reached a new extreme of absurdity over the weekend as out-of-town activists descended on Geno's Steaks to force a conflict by ordering in Spanish.
Geno's, a classic South Philly cheesesteak joint, has been in the news ever since the press discovered that owner Joey Vento put a small sign in his window reading, "This is America. When ordering speak English." Philadelphia's Human Relations Commission filed a complaint over the sign, and was backed by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
Yelped North Jersey lawyer Gilberto Garcia, who organized the stunt:
What we seek is to be served when we order in Spanish.
In an apparent attempt to grind it into the gringos' faces that they can invade our country and then demand we speak their language, Garcia timed his antic for the Fourth of July weekend. He brought along a troupe of 30 immigrants in t-shirts printed with "Pan, Bisteck y Queso, Por Favor" (Spanish for "Bread, Steak and Cheese, Please").
One Mexican native came to the counter and instead of making any attempt to be understood, just kept bleating, "Pan, pan" — Spanish for bread. He was given a cheesesteak, as were all the rest of them.
In the past, Geno's employees have good-naturedly helped non–English-speaking customers to order. If the goal was to prove that they don't even have to try to speak English, Garcia has won a victory in the righteous struggle to replace America with some wretched polyglot third-world hellhole. But it's a small victory, as Vento never intended to turn any customers away — and as of yet, his employees aren't forced to speak Spanish back.
