John Pilger Demonstrates the Left's Support for Israel
While Howard Dean denounces Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as an "anti-Semite" for not committing political suicide by declaring himself to be on Israel's side against Hezbollah, and top Congressional Dems Nancy Pelosi of the House and Harry Reid of the Senate threaten to disinvite al-Maliki from addressing Congress for the same reason, a piece by John Pilger in the liberal Guardian gives some insight into just how supportive the Left is of Israel, beneath the thin veneer of sanctimonious posturing on the part of prominent Democrats.
Pilger stridently laments:
Before our eyes, the Israeli regime (it is never called a regime, of course), armed and bankrolled by the United States, and backed by Britain, is set upon destroying an entire country, deliberately killing civilians, almost half of whom are children; and the crusaders are as quiet as mice or they are busy toiling in the great quarry of obsfucation.
One problem with using $5 words like "obfuscation" is they're hard to spell.
The Israeli military, which with awe-inspiring skill and bravery has managed to hold off the rest of the Middle East for generations, is dismissed with this:
In my experience of war and the Middle East, the Israeli army is one of the most craven. Every day, its soldiers humiliate defenceless, frightened old people and pregnant women at roadblocks and now its F-16 pilots drop phosphorous bombs on families fleeing in rickety vans.
In stark contrast to this "regime" called Israel and its "crusader" allies (namely the USA and Britain), the Hezbollah terrorists who started the current conflict by crossing into Israeli territory to kidnap people and by raining down rockets on civilian populations are the good guys, exemplifying "humanity at its noblest." They are glowingly compared with WWII partisans and the equally praiseworthy (per Pilger) freedom fighters who have been blowing up random civilians and cutting people's heads off in Iraq in an effort to reimpose totalitarianism in that fledgling democracy — or as Pilger refers to them, the "Iraqis who have succeeded in pinning down the American homicidal machine in their country."
Pilger concludes his diatribe by demanding that
those claiming to hold responsible office in "civilised" governments break their cowardly silence and tell the invaders to stop their killing and to get out now.
By "the invaders," he means Israel. Needless to say, you won't see stuff like this coming from conservatives — unless you want to count Pat Buchanan.
