Dan Rather's Ungraceful Retirement
It was too much to hope that Dan Rather would quietly crawl off to the tar pits like a dignified dinosaur. The Dan was on Larry King last night, and as a NewsBusters report indicates, his monstrous ego has not deflated, despite him having been unceremoniously dumped by his longtime home CBS.
Absurdly, Gunga Dan continues to stand by the pre-election Bush National Guard smear job that resulted in his hard fall onto his face. Sure, it was based on crudely forged documents, but focusing on that is just "a diversionary technique."
When reminded that CBS News has been known as "the liberal network," the Dan retorted
They call you names when you insist on being independent.
You seen, sinister forces have it in for guys like Rather, who are "willing to be truly independent, and fiercely independent when called upon, and dedicated to pulling no punches and playing no favorites." Proving that he has no plans to emerge from his liberal time warp, the Dan proceeded to dig up the crumbling bones of McCarthy and Nixon. Raved Rather:
Now, when you're a reporter involved in those kinds of stories on a regular basis, there are...powerful people who say we've got to get rid of this guy or...we're going to damage him up.
That's right, Dan. They're coming for you. So maybe you'd better go home and hide in your closet.
But I'm forgetting, Rather isn't really retired. He's got a gig on HDNet, where he will no longer be "held back by the corporate structure of CBS." Congratulations to the Dan for breaking the story that HDNet exists.

The Mainstream Media learned absolutely nothing from Rathergate. Nada. Zip. Which simple observation leads me to make the following prediction:
Sometime late in the 2008 election season (probably October, of course) the MSM will 'uncover' a story deeply damaging to the Republican candidate. It will spread like wildfire among the usual suspects, mushrooming out of control ... for about three days. Then it will develop that the whole thing is a fairly obvious fraud. Perhaps the source will turn out to be a known nutcase who cannot possibly have been where he claims to have been. Maybe they'll try to pass off inkjet or laser documents as older than the technology that made them (I mean it when I say they've learned NOTHING). My personal bet is they there will be damning photographs ... that anyone remotely familiar with the process can tell have been extensively Photoshopped.
I also expect something of the kind this year, in one crucial race or another, but the effect will be local and (thanks to the selective interest of the Media) so will any scandal.
They (the Liberal Elites) have totally lost it. They resemble nobody so much as the sad Isolationist Republicans who STILL maintain (with all kinds of bogus 'evidence') that FDR masterminded the attack on Pearl Harbor.

This from the guy who gushed over Bill and Hillary Clinton "If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, we'd take it right now and walk away winners...Thank you very much and tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her and we're pulling for her."
But I guess as long as the possibility exists that Sam Beckett didn't leap back to 1972 and, with Ziggy's help, create a working copy of MS Word to type the Bush TANG memos in, we can not rule out the possibility that the memos are authentic.
