Cassey Weierbach, Crusading AIDS Fraud
Thanks go out to Pennsylvania's Cassey Weierbach for demonstrating one of the drawbacks of attempting to address serious problems like AIDS by washing them away in a deluge of taxpayer money.
Weierbach has traveled the country jerking tears at churches, youth groups, and medical conferences with a tale of being raped and infected with AIDS as a child. Now that it has become public knowledge that she doesn't really have AIDS, she has been arrested for defrauding her state of $66,000.
Weierbach's AIDS activist activities included touring with the San Francisco group Hope's Voice, whose executive director Todd Murray grew skeptical when Weierbach showed no symptoms, and downright suspicious when, after downing a few shots in a bar, she hopped out of her wheelchair and started dancing. A doctor finally blew the whistle on her after she refused AIDS medications.
Free on $25,000 bail, Weierbach does not have a listed telephone and may not have a lawyer. Whether she turns up for her trial remains to be seen. Chances are that her case is the tip of a very expensive iceberg.
