Anti-"English Only" Baloney

Joey Vento, owner of Geno's Steaks in the section of Philadelphia known as "ground zero for cheesesteaks," has gotten moonbats' knickers in a twist by posting a small sign in his window that reads, "This Is America: When Ordering Speak English."

Says Vento, whose grandparents went to the trouble to learn English after immigrating from Sicily in the 1920s,

They don't know how lucky they are. All we're asking them to do is learn the English language. We're out to help these people, but they've got to help themselves, too.

His staff helps out anyone who can't order in English. No customers have been turned away because of their lack of language skills. But of course, this isn't good enough for progressives, who are striving to balkanize the melting pot in hopes that an America divided against itself will not be able to stand.

City Councilman Jim Kenney has asked that the sign be taken down. Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp., sniffs that Vento "isn't representative of the Philadelphia attitude" and has threatened not to use Geno's in future advertising campaigns. Local Latino activists plan to send people to Geno's to order in Spanish to see if they can bring about some incident they can hype into a lawsuit.

But Vento is holding his ground, even if it could cost him business. The little sign isn't his first sin against political correctness. The walls of his shop feature memorials to Officer Daniel Faulkner, the Philadelphia cop liberal icon Mumia Abu-Jamal was convicted of murdering.

Four simple letters should help clarify this matter: WWJS? (That's "What Would Jesus Speak?" for you card-carrying members of the ACLU.) The historical record would indicate Hebrew, Aramaic or some other Semitic tongue. Statistically speaking, though, the odds are today that a guy named Jesus speaks Spanish. Either way, when the L&S steps up to the counter at Mr. Vento's establishment, He'll be ordering His Kosher cheesesteak in some language other than English. Which means Mr. Vento will have to learn how to say, "No room at the inn," in Aramaic.

Hey, Rev. Nutroot,

I expect that you provide a full translation of your above comment in both Aramaic AND Spanish.

If you don't Matthew 12: 4-6 says you will burn in enternal hellfire.

Lunatic. Go back to Ruby Ridge.

Does Vento have a website? 'Cause I'm thinking I'd order it to go in support.

This is America, and our national language IS English. What would Jesus speak?? Momentarily setting aside the fact that I think the whole WWJD thing is a distraction from His true teachings (you want the answer to WWJD? Read the Bible and apply it - to your own life first) let me point out that Christ spoke the language OF THE NATION HE LIVED IN.

Self-defeating argument, party of you...

Vento is right!

English is our national language. If one (American born English speaking)indiviual was to live in ohh let's say Columbia and decides not to learn the native language, ventures to one of the local watering holes and tries to order a meal but the owner clearly has a sign in spanish saying "this is Columbia when ordering speak Spanish" do you think there would be all of this drama for the rights of individuals who migrated, illegally entered, etc to that country. Hell No! Those individuals would just be assed out of their dining experience until they learn spanish which really should not be a problem. Like there would be American activists sending people to this Columbian watering hole to stir up some drama. This thing has gone to far. All we do in the U.S. is accommodate. Specifically, if it's regarding our nations language it shouldn't be compromised by NO means, no other country would do it for us.

A thought experiment:

Say that a French Restaurant opens next door to Geno's. They serve classic French food, French wine, and so forth. To uphold the atmosphere they hope to maintain, they ask that their customers speak French when ordering, and instruct the waiters to assist people in doing so.

(Yes, I know, that is hardly typical of a high class French Restaurant. More likely the waiters would stand around and sneer.)

How many Liberals do you think would have a cow?

Hey, Doug:

  1. Rev. Nutroot is my first cousin twice removed on my mother's sister's side, and I resent you confusing us two. He's a real wingnut who believes Jesus would never even set foot in Philadelphia.

  2. Matthew 12:4-6 talks about shewbread, which is used to make hot Reuben sandwiches, not Philly cheesesteak, and therefore is irrelevant to this discussion.

  3. My relationship with Ruby Ridges ended many years ago when I left the adult cinema. I have no reason to go back to her.

And Yak:

  1. Jesus lived in the Roman colony of Palestine, whose administrative language was Esperanta.

  2. Congratulations! The yak was recently declared kosher by Israel's Chief Rabbi.

Hey CSP,

Your experiment fails to take into consideration one tiny detail.

This is not FRANCE.

That so called French restaurant would go belly up within a few days.

Geno's business is thriving and will continue to attract customers regardless of this political headache.

I was there the other night...and I will go back this week sometime.

"Jesus lived in the Roman colony of Palestine, whose administrative language was Esperanta."

Wrong! jesus lived in the land of Judea, and the language was aramaic. Palestina didn't exist until some time toward the end of the 1st century AD. The administrative language of the roman occupation was latin, though many of them spoke greek in order to communicate with the jewish leaders, who were educated in greek on top of their aramaic. Hebrew was a dead language at this time.

"Esparanta" is a constructed language that only existed from the middle of the 20th century onward. The romans never spoke it.

Frankly this lack of knowledge about ancient history makes me doubt your assertion that the Reverend Nutroot is really your cousin.

Listen, Archonix, I'm a preacher, not a goddam history professor. And whatever happened two thousand years ago, one thing I know for sure is that Jesus is fixing to open up a can of Heavenly whoop-ass sometime soon. So stick that in your know-it-all pipe and smoke it.

Posted by: The Right Reverend Rabbi Judah at June 11, 2006 8:23 AM

Hehe! I read that as "Isreal's Chef Rabbi."

Posted by: Brass at June 11, 2006 11:34 AM

One can of heaven-sent whoop-ass coming your way pseudo-jew revolving rev.

Any who calls himself "reverend" is false, since "no one is good, not one, except God" Matt 10:18.

Christ spoke the local lingo. David ate shewbread. And most of the writers here have more Heb in their in pinkies than you do in your whole body.

A secret decoder ring from a crackerjack box doesn't make you a Heb scholar, numb-nuts.

Posted by: jael at June 11, 2006 11:49 AM

Jael, it's true my nuts are numb, but yours would be too if you'd shot 10-15 adult films a week for twelve years. (Some of you might know me better as Redbone Poonhound, my stage name before I heard the Lord's calling.) As for pinko Heebs, there's really no call for Red-baiting. In case you haven't heard, the Cold War's over. (We won.) And I make no secret of my decoder ring.

As you say, Jesus spoke the local lingo. The Roman colonial rulers of that time did not. Which makes Him sort of like the equivalent of a Puerto Rican.

I am going to send this guy a donation and a Thank You for sticking up for what other's only bitch about. Way to go!

I think I'm starting to warm up to you Rev. You're a funny lunatic.

Posted by: Doug at June 11, 2006 6:47 PM

Hey, Does freedom of SPEACH, Freedom of Expression mean anything to anyone??? Geno has a constitutional right (freedom) to put up that sign!! Get a clue folks!! Stand by your rights Geno!! If someone is offended by the sign, they should get with the program and learn the language so they are NOT offended just like all the immigrants that came here before them. They should be ashamed of themselves that people feel sorry for them because they don't speak or understand ENGLISH!!

Laughter is the best form of prayer, Doug. Besides church donations, of course.
