The Word "America" to Be Allowed in Michigan Schools

Here's some good news: the words "America" and "American" will be permitted (for now) in Michigan social studies classes.

Karen Todorov, consultant for the Michigan Department of Education's social studies department, managed long ago to get these objectionable (to moonbats) words banned from Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) social studies testing, on the absurd grounds that since Mexico and Canada are also part of North America, their citizens are also Americans, and therefore it is "ethnocentric" to refer to Americans as Americans. "The Loathsome Land of Racist Oppression" and "The Evil Capitalist Pigs Who Cannot Be Named" would apparently be more apt designations from the point of view of the deranged America-hating fools in charge of children's education.

But now Todorov has overreached by telling a meeting of the Michigan Social Studies Supervisors Association that teachers should be told not to use the dirty words "America" and "Americans" in class. Enough publicity was generated over this bizarre outrage that state school Superintendent Mike Flanagan was forced to announce that social studies teachers will still be permitted to say the name of our country (though it is still not allowed on the MEAP test).

No doubt the vulgarities "America" and "American" will be banned again when educrats think no one is paying attention. If they get away with it next time, they might move on to forbid other words that are obscene from the progressive point of view, like "capitalism" and "individuality" and "freedom."

Those who can't do, teach. And those who can't teach? Consult. I'm sure Consulting Karen wouldn't have a problem with teachers using the word "Amerika" (or, even better, "Amerikkka") in the classroom. She's probably a tofu-eating, moon-worshipping, Wiccan. (Don't worry, we can still say that.)

It's an old comment, but if you can't call it America, and you can't refer to yourself as an American, then what do you call people from the US?

Liberal guilt may be attempting to call our culture as good as any other, but this seems like an attempt to completely remove our identity. We're so bad, we don't even deserve a label!

She looks precisely like the toad that she is. A leftist with delusions of Socialist Utopia dancing in her otherwise empty head.

It's not liberal guilt, Hal. It's liberal arrogance... in this case, the arrogance that one liberal should dictate the language used by everyone else to correspond with her arrogant notion of what constitutes civility and sensitivity.
