Unruly Passenger Awarded Massive Fortune for Being Iranian

You'd better have an air sickness bag on hand before you read this one:
In 2003 Samantha Carrington, a U.S. citizen born in Iran, caused enough of a disturbance aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that she was arrested. Although charges against her were dropped the next day, Carrington smelled money and hired a lawyer. The idea, of course, was to claim she was being put upon for looking Middle Eastern in the tense period following September 11.
A jury awarded her $27.5 million.
If your airline ticket seems a little pricey, and if people who come from a part of the world that exports a great deal of terrorism get extra special treatment and less scrutiny than they should, thank trial lawyers and the vicious, irresponsible juries they persuade to do their bidding — and don't forget the Democratic Party, which in exchange for massive contributions prevents our utterly insane tort system from being reformed.
