Colorado Lawmakers Call on Bush to Defend the Border
Eight Colorado Republicans have sent a letter to President Bush pleading with him to do his job by declaring a national state of emergency to secure our borders. Horrified by the recent demonstrations on behalf of illegal aliens, they ask that the National Guard be used to secure the border, "until effective barriers are in place to stop all illegal infiltration."
The letter makes some good points. Here's one:
Every month, more illegal aliens infiltrate our borders than the entire three-division U.S. Marine force that assaulted Iwo Jima during World War II.
Here's another:
Many illegal aliens now arrogantly oppose our American culture, our Constitutional process of citizenship, the Rule of Law, and the national sovereignty of the Southwestern United States.
The Governors of Arizona and New Mexico have already officially acknowledged that the border situation is an emergency. Kudos to the Colorado 8 for insisting that Bush follow suit.
If the Federal Government won't defend our borders from invasion, exactly what is it good for?

I think we should nuke the border, and build a wall around Iran. :(
(Sorry I made a frowny face by mistake)

Just patrol the border with unmanned bombers. If they are brave enough to try to cross with precision tactical bombing overhead, then we give them a free pass at the border. Create a 1/2 mile wide no-fly zone and mount a few cameras just for fun. Make it a reality show where contestants bet on an illegal couple, and if they win they get a free gardener and nanny.

If illegals get amnesty, and if you don't stop the flood from the south, you will never elect a republican again. The DNC is pandering to the illegal and southern vote, just like they do to the African-American community. They play the racist card, the socialist card, and the hate-middle America card, better and more disingenuously than anyone else. In Europe the left panders to Muslims, in the USA the left panders to minorities. Unfortunately, it's often a winning formula for socialists and liberals.

People who say we can't do anything about illegal immigration are like the people back in the eighties who said we couldn't do anything about urban crime. Until Rudy Giuliani showed up and showed that if you enforce the law the crime rate falls.
One solution: Supposedly, businesses can be fined $10,000 per illegal they hire, but out of 12 million illegals, the FedGov only fined 3 business last year. Why don't we turn enforcement of that over to local governments and let them keep the fine? We know the lengths they are willing to go to to collect a $100 speeding ticket, imagine what they'd do to collect that windfall.

Sounds like a viable solution to the cost of erecting some sort of border, either electronic or physical, and increasing the patrols, and offsetting the cost of prosecuting and deporting (those that get deported rather than gain citizenship).
12 million illegals - if even 1/4 of them are illegally working and fines are given that equals 40 billion in fines. Now realistically probably only 1% of that would ever be paid, which comes to 400 million.
Now, out of that 12 million, how many will be willing to pay fines and do paperwork to become citizens at a port of entry? Let's say 10 million just to throw out a number, maybe a bit overestimated. At $2000 a piece in fines, that's another 20 million.
There's 420 million. What could we do with 420 million? A lot. But ask any politician if they'd rather take 420 million to offset costs or take 12 million potential votes in the next election.

There's a good piece on the New York Post website today, by Arnold Ahlert, entitled "Border No-Brainer" at http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/64399.htm
