Tax Dollars at Work in Washington State
Charles Grassley, head of the Senate Finance Committee, would like Washington's alleged Governor Christine Gregoire to explain why Medicaid in her state has been paying for erectile implants, sex-change operations, and breast enlargements.
Grassley expressed amazement at auditor findings that included $9,500 spent on a Medicaid patient's gender-transformation surgery, $40,000 on plastic surgery, and over $100,000 on "unauthorized" breast implants.
State Auditor Brian Sonntag isn't pleased either. Apparently the state's Department of Social and Health Services has not gone out of its way to assist his investigations into how frivolously it has wasted taxpayer's money.
But it may be unfair to single out Washington, which Sonntag notes isn't the only state to bill Medicaid for sexual-performance surgeries and gender transplants.
