John Conyers: Not Just Kooky But Corrupt
Posted by Dave Blount at March 1, 2006 6:33 AM
Despite the incessantly repeated talking points, the party characterized by its Culture of Conniptions is probably not in the best position to point fingers when it comes to corruption. Harry Reid's Abramoff ties are one reason. Hillary is another. Congressman John Conyers is a third.
In a 26-paragraph article that manages to get to paragraph #25 without using any form of the word "Democrat," The Hill details some of the various misdeeds of Conyers (D-MI), who may be best known to connoisseurs of moonbattery for the absurd kangaroo court over which he presided last June, which found the President guilty of various imaginary crimes. Others may recall that his staff allegedly stole 60 turkeys from a charity.
Allegations described in The Hill include:
- Demanding that his congressional aides work on local and state campaigns (for example, his wife's fail state Senate bid).
- Forcing aides to baby-sit, tutor, and chauffeur his children.
- Stiffing a catering company.
Some of his aides face allegations too:
- Using his office to obtain a fake passport in order to flee to Ghana after being convicted of fraud, making false statements, and government theft.
- Conducting a private law practice out of his office.
"I could not tolerate any longer being involved with continual unethical, if not criminal, practices which were accepted as 'business as usual,'" his former deputy chief of staff wrote in a letter to a congressional ethics panel. Her allegations against Conyers go back to 1998.
At least he seems to have gotten away with swiping the turkeys.
