$100 a Barrel Would Make Friedman's Day

Wouldn't it be great if Iran were able to drive the price of oil up to $100 a barrel, crippling our economy? New York Times moonbat Tom Friedman sure thinks so. The concept had him drooling with enthusiasm on "Good Morning America," as reported by NewsBusters:

Charles Gibson: "When Iran threatens harm and pain what can they do necessarily? I mean, are they talking about restricting oil sales and cutting off oil and perhaps driving the price of oil up? Are they talking about causing more problems in Iraq for the United States, what?"
Tom Friedman: "Well, of course if you're talking about the oil weapon, you know, from my own personal perspective, Charlie, they cut off oil and oil went to $100 a barrel that would make my day. Because the sooner we go to $100 a barrel, the sooner we're going to have everyone in America driving a plug-in hybrid car fueled by corn and ethanol. And I think that would be a great thing and that would ultimately free us from having to worry about these people."

Needless to say, if switching to vehicles that don't require us to drill for oil in this country or buy it from others were currently feasible, we would have done it already.

But maybe Friedman is thinking that a severe depression could slow down consumption sufficiently that oil wouldn't be necessary. We could tell the Muslims to eat their oil — and they could tell us to eat our moonbattery.

According to DOE, 2.5% of US power is generated by oil fired plants. 49.9% is coal produced. While 19.3% came from nuclear plants, down 1% from last year.

So on power production, Iran turning off the taps wont have a national impact. Those localities who get power from oil plants, your standard of living will plummet due to incrased electric bills.

Same will happen to the heating oil crowd as wood/coal stoves make a comeback and natural gas supplies get squeezed harder. Standard of living will plummet as people cut back to afford heat.

We need to drill in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and in ANWR while streamlining nuclear plant construction. France has a standard power plant design and use it while American plants tend to be custom builds. Now if the US standardized, cost of nuclear plants would fall and hence electric bills.

If we don't, expect to see lots of the elderly and low income in the North-East to freeze to death. Or even more people moving into the hurricane zone.

Why not just hit all the foreign oil foelds with dirty nukes laced with cobalt. The resultant contamination would last 2000 years.

End of the Arabs, and just imagine how 'free of oil' we would be then?

There's just one problem, ah two, no three, no 10,000 ...

Freidman, who I haven't read since TImes went 'premium' has lost it. Idiotic idea.
