UN Jobs Program for Rapists
The United Nations is finally making itself useful by offering an excellent job opportunity for serial rapists, particularly those who prefer their victims young. As Dimitri Vassilaros observes at PittsburghLIVE.com,
Most rapists do not get to police their own crime scenes, food to trade for sex, diplomatic immunity and indifference from the people supervising them.
UN peacekeepers have all of these advantages, and the situation won't be changing soon. According to Jordan's UN ambassador Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid al-Hussein, a "culture of dismissiveness" is responsible for the continuing high rate of sexual abuse charges against blue-helmeted peacekeepers, who have a longstanding reputation for using food to bribe hungry children into performing sex acts.
But don't worry, the UN is "working on it," as the saying goes. Peacekeeping chief Jean-Marie Guehenno has announced that a UN program to assist the victims of UN peacekeepers will be proposed soon.
Jordan's al-Hussein estimates it could take 3–4 more years for a reform program to show results. In the meantime, rapists who submit their applications now should have plenty of time to indulge in criminal sexual deviancy.
So far there have been 295 allegations against UN troops and staff, resulting in 170 perpetrators being sent home or dismissed. Considering that the UN has 85,000 people on its staff in over 100 countries, and no one denies that the sexual abuse problem is prevalent, this implies that the chances of even provoking an allegation are remote. The odds of being sent home are slimmer still. The likelihood that child rapists will face appropriate punishment is nil.
Thank you, United Nations, for putting the dead but unburied Abu Ghraib fiasco into perspective.
