The Limits of Multiculturalism
What's great about multiculturalism is that it celebrates the value of all cultures, right?
At a "multicultural assembly" at a high school in Missouri, a student intrigued by his family's Southern heritage raised the Confederate flag during a presentation of "The Yellow Rose of Texas."
Although his intention was simply to assert that Southern culture ought to be honored like any other, he was removed from the assembly and has not yet been allowed back to school.

Before mojo or RR open their stinking rotten cake holes I want to ask them this:
How do you explain the double standard of Leftists like yourself using Nazi symbols for nearly everything with your sanctimonious snivelling about even once seeing the stars and bars regardless of the context?
Hmm?

Well, Leftists use the Nazi flag as a way of calling their opponents Nazis.
If they started waving them in support of Nazism, that would be something else.
I have to think there are other ways to "celebrate Southern culture" than by waving this evil rag around. It represents slavery.
That something you want anyone supporting?

Addendum:
Not that repression is the answer. The kid should be free to flaunt whatever symbols he likes. But don't try to make me believe he was just an innocent celebrating his culture. Not even a redneck is that stupid.
People can provoke as much as they like, and the rest of us are free to call them idiots.
(But not burn down their consulates.)

So Cato, these stupid rednecks of yours — they not only believe in slavery but they're all bigots too, right?
Posted by: Van Helsing at February 6, 2006 1:59 PM
Van Helsing, do you believe this kid was just "celebrating Southern culture"? If so, I've got a bridge to sell you.
I made no comment about "all" rednecks.

Just to make Cato's head explode:
What about Leftists using Communist images?
Posted by: Doug at February 6, 2006 2:55 PM
Hey Cate, what about using images of Muhammed? Should we ban that too?
Posted by: Ronald Reagan at February 6, 2006 2:57 PM
Where did I say to ban anything?
Just don't pretend you don't know what the wretched Stars-and-Bars banner means.
If opposition to moonbats means I have to sympathize with unreconstructed Dixiecrats, then fie!
And a pox on General Lee, both man and car!

The Stars and Bars mean different things to different people, but I would guess that if you took a poll of everyone who has a Confederate flag sticker on his truck, about zero out of a thousand would want to reinstitute slavery, and the rest would just say it represents the South. If you wanted people to know that you're racist, you would go with a swastika.

Not sure why the southerners keep flying the confederate flag - its just a reminder of their dark past as and a symbol of their crushing defeat at the hands of the US Army. The Confederate flag should be buried in General Lees tomb.

People should be able to display whatever flag they want: The stars and bars, the Hungarian Flag, the US Flag, or even the JAP flag of the rising sun. I had a flag torn off my car by an "idiot" as someone posted. He had his own "reality" I guess, but didn't know where other's property begins. He show a lack of class, which I was not surprised. One person's offense may be another's heritage, or even a neutral flag or color. What does the "idiot" poster say to the girl who accidentally wore the wrong colors in LA and was intentionally killed for some gang color. Complete and utter ignorance as well as a lack of family and lack of a sense of the world. Where was the peace?
