Obese Woman Sues For Racism
Posted by Dave Blount at February 9, 2006 12:37 PM
On a recent Southwest Airlines flight one Nadine Thompson, who weighed between 300 and 350 pounds at the time, was asked to comply with the Airline's policy by paying for a second seat on the grounds that her considerable mass spilled over into it.
Naturally the outrageous suggestion that a woman of color should have to abide by the same regulations as everyone else elicited a violent reaction. Thompson made a major scene, admittedly using obscenities, calling airline employees "racist cowards" and declaring, "You might as well have a sheet over your head." She ended up getting a refund on her ticket and taking a different airline.
But an insult this grievous couldn't be left there. She called Southwest's corporate offices. Unsurprisingly, the airline bowed its head in submission and apologized. Thompson was offered $350 in gift certificates.
Not good enough: Thompson is suing Southwest for racial discrimination.
