Good News From Canada
Canada seems pretty certain to vote Conservatives into power on January 23, despite hysterical moonbat concern about the country turning "into a bastion for a U.S.-style extreme right."
With luck, the grownups will take control before anyone follows the recommendation of a report excreted by a $150,000 polygamy project (financed by Canadian taxpayers) that wants the law against polygamy repealed.
At first glance this looks like just another step in the sanctimonious march into dhimmitude. Yet it seems Muslims aren't the only ones in Canada with an interest in polygamy. As National Post reports:
[T]he project was also intended to provide the Liberal government with ammunition to help defend its same-sex marriage bill last spring.
Opponents claimed the bill, now law, was a slippery slope that would open the door to polygamy and even beastiality.
Another report for the project, also led by two Queen's University professors, dismisses the slippery-slope argument, saying that allowing same-sex marriages promotes equality while polygamous marriages are generally harmful to women's interests and would therefore promote inequality.
Then how does lifting the ban on polygamy serve women's rights? Here's what the report says:
Criminalization does not address the harms associated with valid foreign polygamous marriages and plural unions, in particular the harms to women... The report therefore recommends that this provision be repealed.
Fortunately Liberal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler rejects legalizing polygamy. All the same, I'd say Stephen Harper and his Conservatives are riding to the rescue just in time.

Yes indeed, it looks like the conservatives will win a majority in parliament. But note, that's with a small "c" not by any means in the sense the word as it's known in the US.
And besides, does Stephen Harper go around with the campaign slogan "The Liberals will turn Canada into another Soviet Union!" ?
Maybe he should

The very saddest thing about polygamy is that the marriages do not usually occur between a man and many women, but rather a man and many young girls. Girls that are not old enough to be making a commitment like marriage.

None too soon, but too little too late?
Undoing 40-odd years of Leftism/Socialism, a huge task. I'll take a wait-and-see stance on this. I hope Conservatism and common sense make real headway up there but I have my doubts, even if Harper does prevail on the 23rd.
Too many Canadians like things jut the way they are.
