Case Study in Projection and Bigotry

Not everyone is shedding tears over the tragic events at the Sago Mine. In an appalling article in The Amsterdam News, one Wilbert A. Tatum, Publisher Emeritus and Chairman of the Board, implies that the miners deserved their fate for being rural Caucasians.

Here's what Tatum has to say about the miners and all those other nasty crackers in flyover country:

In the main these are not colored people, people of color, Negroes or niggers as they would be called if they were there... [M]ost of them are as ignorant as dirt, poor, white protestants who volunteer to their calling of serving the armed services of the United States as quickly as they hear the call. They are Americans who, for the lack of education and training, hate other Americans, especially those Black of hue.

The spectacle of this obnoxious, semiliterate bigot accusing people he knows nothing about other than their region, occupation, and skin color of hating other Americans because of their "hue" ought to be written up for a psychiatry journal as a case study in malignant projection. But I wouldn't doubt that more than a few denizens of the Upper West Side have congratulated themselves for agreeing with this attempt at a sentence:

To tie all this tragedy and drama together while you are looking at the grief of the Sago mine tragedy where miscommunication was in many ways worse than the tragedy, where tears are being shed by people, all white, young and old, mostly fat and not at all with the look of Hollywood; but rather the leftovers from rickets, tuberculosis, no dental care and an assurance that they are better off in Upsur County West Virginia than any Black in America whether he or she lives in the Tower Suite of the Waldorf Hotel or the back waters along Louisiana Delta.

"Sing no sad songs for the white people of this country who are confronted with disaster," Tatum advises.

My own advice: Sing no sad songs for posturing bigots who pretend to be the victims of bigotry.

Thanks to V the K for the tip.

Tatum is so whacked out even Rev. Al keeps him at arm's length...sometimes.
