NBC Reaches Out to Christians

Posted by Dave Blount at December 21, 2005 2:46 PM

It looks like the mainstream media is serious about paying more attention to people of faith. Beliefnet reports on a new series picked up by NBC called "The Book of Daniel," featuring an Episcopal priest whose son is gay, whose daughter deals drugs, whose lesbian secretary is having sex with his sister-in-law, and whose 16-year-old adopted son is having sex with the bishop's daughter. The priest is addicted to Vicodin and meets with Jesus in his station wagon.

The series' writer, Jack Kenny, who wears his homosexuality prominently on his sleeve, considers himself to be "in Catholic recovery," and has taken an interest in Buddhism.

"Organized religion is, to me, almost the same organism as the Mafia," says Kenny. "I always wanted to explore religion the way 'The Sopranos' explored the Mafia, through the focal lens of a family."
