United Nations Bids to Take Over Internet

This is scary news for anyone who values the Internet:

Kofi Annan, Coming to a Computer Near You! The Internet's long run as a global cyberzone of freedom — where governments take a "hands off" approach — is in jeopardy. Preparing for next month's U.N.-sponsored "World Summit on the Information Society" (or WSIS) in Tunisia, the European Union and others are moving aggressively to set the stage for an as-yet unspecified U.N. body to assert control over Internet operations and policies now largely under the purview of the U.S. In recent meetings, for an example, an EU spokesman asserted that no single country should have final authority over this "global resource."

This so-called "global resource" was developed in the USA, but that won't stop globalists from helping themselves to it, just as they would help themselves to everything else in this country if given a chance. We aren't just talking about who divvies up domain names — content will be effected, and drastically. As the WSJ points out:

Some of the countries clamoring for regulation under the auspices of the U.N. — such as China and Iran — are among the most egregious violators of human rights.

Imagine corrupt lowlife like Annan — in collaboration with communist dictators and the evil mullahs of Iran — determining what can or cannot be said online. It would be like replacing the Internet with PBS. To state the obvious, this cannot be allowed to happen.

It won't happen. The DNS root still resides on a server in the US. There are a number of regional root servers around the world that refer to the DNS root for routing information. The only way that they could conceivably set up their own control over the internet would be to make their own DNS root server and then somehow convince the - orften private - organisations that control the regional root servers to point to their DNS. It's unlikely that they would all comply, which would result in half the world operating on one internet and half the world operating on another. Then you'd find that these two internets rapidly diverged, unless the UN root server kept refreshing itself from the US root server, which would render it just another regional server, albeit one that's added another layer of latency to the net. If they wanted to mitigate this, they could change the protocols of their new server and force the regional DNS roots to change to this new protocol somehow. This, unfortunately, would mean that every single computer in the world would also have to be changed.

I can see the EU taking part in this, along with China. The EU can simply legislate the changes in the regional DNS servers within its sphere of influence, and China can just use the threat of force to the same end. All that would result in is the internet, and the EUCHInet. Considering the amount of business that takes place on the internet, all this would result in is economic isolation for both the EU and the PRC. But, then, the EU has always been about economic isolation...

Archonix,

You are right there, except I don't think that the Chinese are as stupid as the Europeans, and they don't have any pathalogical hatred towards Americans. Any dislike of the US (in China) is a result of political propaganda from communist governments, which although worrying is much easier to overcome than the deep seeded hatred of the Europeans (and by extension their so-called Islamic brothers). China will do whatever they think is in their interest, Europe will do whatever they think is not in America's interest.

But what about the psychological effects this will have on consumer confidence (especially in the US). This could greatly affect e-commerce. With the UN in control, the quality of service would degrade siginificantly for new entrants (ie. registering a new site would require a bribe), safety and security on the internet could also be compromised (given the criminal elements in the UN).

clarification:

by "hatred of the europeans", I mean the europeans' hatred, that hatred which belongs to the europeans, as in the europeans are involved in the act of hating.

'The DNS root still resides on a server in the US.'

Until some one-worlder get's elected.

'This, unfortunately, would mean that every single computer in the world would also have to be changed.'

A small price to pay for world peace.

Well you just KNOW we'll give away control of the internet just as soon as someone with a "global test" philosophy is elected to the White House.

We want everyone in the world to like us after all.

And as soon as the UN gets their hands on it... China will be appointed to chair the committee to oversee it along with Iran.
