Near Miss
It looks like we dodged a bullet on this one:
An Oklahoma University student who killed himself by detonating a bomb strapped to his body outside a packed stadium over the weekend was a "suicide bomber" in possession of "Islamic jihad" materials, according to a new report.
The suicidal kook, Joel Henry Hinrichs III, had enough explosives left over in his apartment that it took authorities several trips to remove it all — as well as a "significant amount" of Islamic terrorist literature. The nearby Islamic Society of Norman, Oklahoma didn't want to comment.
University officials, wearing their PC blinders as always, tried to spin this as nothing more than a lone lunatic doing the world a favor:
"We know that he has had what I would call emotional difficulties in the past. There is certainly no evidence at this point which points to any other kind of motivation other than his personal problems," said University President David Boren over the weekend.
However, personality problems hardly preclude involvement in Islamic terrorism. Rather, they would seem to be a prerequisite.
The same poison that mosques and madrasas have used to turn messed-up young men into deadly maniacs on the other side of the world can already be found in the heart of our heartland. Let's hope the FBI is keeping an extremely close eye on the activities of "Islamic societies" — and that politicians are sensible enough not to get in its way.
Thanks to Byron for the tip.

Update
BTW, Hinrichs attended the same mosque as Zacharias Moussaoui, the only person charged in connection with 9/11. But of course we wouldn't want to jump to conclusions and assume that his bomb-making activities had anything to do with Islam. Hat tip: Clarity & Resolve.

Trying to make a possible correlation between this and the previous OK City bombing is probably a stretch but many were never satisfied that McVeigh and the other dingbat were acting alone. I think Cao blogged on this some recently, perhaps at TWA.
Just goes to show you: no body anywhere is safe.

So if you are going to commit suicide... what do you need with ammonium nitrate? What do you need with a large cache of explosives?
