Coexist? Yeah, Right

If you're as annoyed by this vacuous bumper sticker as I am, you might enjoy a recent piece by Mark Steyn in The Australian (thanks to Byron for the tip). Here's Steyn's take on it:
I found myself behind a car in Vermont, in the US, the other day; it had a one-word bumper sticker with the injunction "COEXIST". It's one of those sentiments beloved of Western progressives, one designed principally to flatter their sense of moral superiority. The C was the Islamic crescent, the O was the hippie peace sign, the X was the Star of David and the T was the Christian cross. Very nice, hard to argue with. But the reality is, it's the first of those symbols that has a problem with coexistence. Take the crescent out of the equation and you wouldn't need a bumper sticker at all. Indeed, coexistence is what the Islamists are at war with; or, if you prefer, pluralism, the idea that different groups can rub along together within the same general neighbourhood.
As much as moonbat bureaucrats might like to pretend that we can mollify the Islamist monster if we just give enough free money to Africa or stick enough knives into Israel's back, the fact is there's only one thing we do that bothers Muslims — we coexist.
The latest Bali bombing underscored the fact that they don't need any other reason to kill Westerners. What do Australian tourists do to oppress Muslims? Their money keeps the local economy alive. No matter. They don't hate Jews for being Zionists, they hate Jews for being Jews. They hate Americans for being Americans. They hate Australians for being Australians. They hate anyone who hasn't embraced their malevolent ideology, and they hate us enough to kill us, as they have proven at every possible opportunity.
Coexisting is not part of the game plan for Muslims. Their definition of peace is when there aren't any infidels left. In the meantime, the blood will keep flowing. Smug bumper stickers won't do much to stop it.
