The Gitmo Canard
Has more noise ever been generated over less substance than with this absurd Guantanamo Bay charade that has been playing out in the media?
Canadian Rachel Marsden's recent article on the phony controversy is spot on. As she astutely points out, Amnesty International is seriously jeopardizing its credibility with over-the-top, anti-American rhetoric comparing Gitmo to gulags. Read pretty much anything by Alexandr Solzhenitsyn and you will know that this comparison is not so much hyperbole as obscenity — an obscene insult to the United States, which bends over backwards to be civilized to people who are not civilized, and to the countless victims who perished in the hell within a hell that was the Soviet system of gulags.
Marsden lays it out nicely:
Reality check: Under normal wartime practices, these enemy combatants would already have been lined up against the nearest wall and shot. "International law" protects prisoners of war who belong to a legitimate national army, not terrorists.
Not that the lowlife terrorists at Gitmo haven't been treated with downright obsequious consideration. Can you imagine the military passing out copies of Mein Kampf to German POWs during WWII? And then making a big deal about it if a guard inadvertently failed to handle one properly?
For an idea of just how the little darlings at Gitmo are pampered, check out this NY Times article detailing the "abuses" they have had to endure.
One victim suffered because his free Koran got splashed by some horseplaying soldiers throwing water balloons. Please compare accidental torture by water balloon with this.
In another incident of abuse, an interrogator was said to have squatted down in front of a detainee "in an aggressive manner." No doubt the poor guy will be traumatized for life; I think I smell a lawsuit.
Urine got on one of the 1,600 Korans that we taxpayers bought for the nice terrorists when a soldier accidentally relieved himself too close to a vent. Here's what happened afterward:
The senior guard on duty immediately relieved the guard, and ordered that the detainee receive a fresh uniform and a new Koran. The guard was reprimanded and assigned to duty where he had no contact with detainees for the remainder of his assignment at the detention center.
One interrogator actually did step on a Koran. He apologized, but was later fired.
Are you beginning to understand that so-called abuse at Guantanamo Bay is not a real issue at all, but a thoroughly contrived canard created out of thin air by al Qaeda's allies in the media in order to put America on the defensive? When these dirtbags are let loose to resume their terrorist activities, they are going to feel like the characters in the cruise line commercials, who dreamily recall how they lived like royalty, if only for a short while. I really doubt life was so comfortable back in their caves in Afghanistan, or that ever in their lives they were treated with so much consideration.
Not that they appreciate it. They despise us for our weakness — and not without some justification.
By the way, it was terrorists, not Americans, who tried to flush a Koran down the toilet at Gitmo. Not that there is any sane reason anyone should care.

The left don't care how many die because of this stupid crap. They only care about nailing Bush, they don't care how many nails they put in real coffins in the process. Sick.

The idiocy of the GITMO canard can be demonstrated by asking one question: "What do we do with the detainees after we close GITMO?"
- Turn them loose? Knowing that many of them are terrorists who will then try to kill Americans?
- Send them to another prison? Will simply changing location ensure that no detainee receives less than the five star spa treatment the left believes they are entitled to?
I have a suggestion. Every detainee will be released into the custody of a volunteer from Amnesty Internation and the ACLU, who must take the detainee into their home. Each detainee will be provided with a Koran, a toothbrush, a full change of clothes... and a boxcutter.
Sleep tight, lefties.

This is the madness of the left. They have to keep the emotional "hate Bush" bubble going. Just as the stock market bubble of the late 90's was nothing more than the market feeding on itself, this constant false barrage from the MSM and the left needs more emotion to feed upon to keep the base energized. Long term, this strategy will fail, remember Tom Daschle. Many more to pick off, keep it up, lefties.

That's right, the pissing on Korans MUST be incidental, and the worst thing happening there. You dopes must drink denial shakes for lunch. I suppose you also believe social security is in trouble, Bush went to Georgia to strengthen ties with Putin (not because there is a pipeline slated to go RIGHT THROUGH GEORGIA), and disassemble means "to lie", as Dubya stated.

Yep, when they get emotional, they also get disjointed and rather humorous.

Fortunately for us, they're too busy ranting, spitting, and lining their trucker caps with aluminum foil to actually accomplish anything.
Posted by: V the K at June 8, 2005 9:01 AM
V the K, you mean lining their whole house in tinfoil right?
The myopia of these people is truly amazing; they really care not what happens as long as they are allowed to be deluded sheep with their iPods, laptops, and Starbucks.
The fanatical Islamic nutcase is worse than the most banzai prone Japanese soldier was in WWII. They are equal opportunity killers since the whole Western world is thier enemy.

I should have said, " they're too busy ranting, spitting, lining their trucker caps with aluminum foil, and drinking bong water."
If you ever needed any more proof that excessive pot use leads to paranoia and impaired reasoning skills, look no further than the modern American left.
Posted by: V the K at June 8, 2005 12:34 PM
Awww, hey - I resemble that remark about iPods, laptops and Starbucks. However, to the left, that makes me a tool of the evil corporate powered greed machine that eats babies, which is how I like it. What you don't see past the white headphones, Fujitsu notebook and grande nonfat mocha is the Springfield in the SOB holster or the lifted 4x4 in the parking lot with the "W'04" sticker on the back...
Posted by: Josh at June 8, 2005 2:05 PM
The lifted 4 by 4. You might be a redneck.Does it have the cool rebel flag, too? dope. Back to the trailer Josh. The left are anything but sheep; we dont listen to the dribble that comes out Dubya's incoherent speeches and feel all better because we don't believe his lies. How many times will you choads believe that "things are getting better in Iraq"? We will never be able to leave there, and it was a lie that got us there in the first place.
We do care what happens, which is why we challenge the bullshit machine to tell the truth. I know it's a difficult concept for you; the whole thinking for yourself thing, but someday you simply must step out of the denial and flower filled fields that your leadership is providing.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 9, 2005 9:43 AM
Did I upset your Prius-driving "sensibilitites", hippie? I guess I have to go buy a confederate flag sticker now, so I can be a redneck that owns a house and works for a living. But whatever. That was so cool how you tried to marginalize me by inferring that I'm white trash, but let me ask you this - where did your daddy touch you when you were a little boy?
"The left are anything but sheep." BWAHAHAHAHA - that made my morning. The left are nothing but sheep. Whether you love the environment more than people, you want to smoke dope legally, you want to overthrow the gov't, you think Bush=Hitler, etc, etc ad infinitum, you assholes are all the same. That's right - all the same. You mimic each others moves, sayings, speeches, talking points, etc without even changing the relevant information. Sooner or later, you'll all just form a drum circle and smell bad. You talk about changing the world, but you're probably just some shiftless loser in mom's basement or closet or attic or something.
Why is it that you all are still maintaining there are 100,000+ dead civilian Iraqis when it has been thoroughly discredited? Why keep saying the war is for oil when 1) the French opposed the invasion but owned most of the oil assets and 2) gas prices keep getting higher? Why do you maintain these warped delusions that pass through your drug-addled brain as "facts"?
Just because you say something enough times doesn't make it true, but because you keep echoing thoroughly discredited data and references, it makes you a sheep. Keep your rose-colored glasses on, hippie, because in light of all the failures, hypocrisy and ignorance of the left, you're going to need them.
Signing off from Starbucks with my "denial shake"...
Posted by: Josh at June 9, 2005 1:59 PM
It doesn't dawn on you that since much of the UN wasn't and isn't onboard with Dumbya, and we invaded anyway, that there might be some countries, like France, who knew this was not about "spreading freedom", does it? Did you suppose that gas prices would go down, since we decided to start fighting a losing battle in the middle east? God only knows where and when the push may stop. (maybe in 2008)
Thoroughly discredited by who? The conservative backed sect of the media, or the ever-competent intel community who gave us crap info from day 1?
Conservatives like to continually point out that they have "the facts", and the left are making up lies. When you get your "facts" from people who have been lying so long, that they believe it themselves, what can one expect, I suppose.
Why do you fine, upstanding tards believe that all lefties are hippies that want to smoke pot and hug trees? Maybe it's from your inherent desire to stereotype everything and pretend you aren't deluded by the W.
At least we don't have to endure the pain of the denial of realizing that our leader has the vocabulary of a 6th grader. If he doesn't have a firm grasp on the native language, how is anyone supposed to believe that he can make good decisions about something other than which bomber jacket to wear when Blair visits? Nice of a guy that avoided active duty like the plague to wear a bomber jacket, by the way.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 9, 2005 6:55 PM
Thanks Rob. A barely literate left-wing bigot accusing conservatives of stereotyping and Bush of having a limited vocabulary really helps to reinforce my views on liberal hypocrisy.
Posted by: Van Helsing at June 9, 2005 8:01 PM
Ahhhh, yes, the much expected, " I don't have a defense or basis for my beliefs, so I will attempt to belittle you even though what I say is not applicable" take. At least you folks are predictable.

It doesn't dawn on you that since much of the UN wasn't and isn't onboard with Dumbya,
Much of the UN is made up of tinpot dictatorships like Libya, Cuba, North Korea, Sudan, Zimbabwe... and they are routinely rewarded with spots on the Human Rights Commission. Also, the UN skimmed off billions of dollars from the Oil-For-Palaces program. Being opposed by the likes of Kofi Annan should be a badge of honor.
Thoroughly discredited by who? The conservative backed sect of the media, or the ever-competent intel community who gave us crap info from day 1?
If it conforms with Rob S. prejudices, then hard facts be damned!
Conservatives like to continually point out that they have "the facts", and the left are making up lies.
I don't know where the Right might get the crazy idea that the left makes up lies. ... cough ... Jayson Blair, Dan Rather, Michael Moore, Ward Churchill, Eason Jordan...
Why do you fine, upstanding tards believe that all lefties are hippies that want to smoke pot and hug trees?
Indymedia, Democratic Underground Message Board (D.U.M.B), Daily Kos, MTV, any given "anti-War" protest, the entire San Francisco bay area...
At least we don't have to endure the pain of the denial of realizing that our leader has the vocabulary of a 6th grader
Hooked on Phonics was a godsend to the Dean family. Now, if only he'd learn to shut up. YEEEEE-ARRRRRRGH!

I don't see any qualitative evidence in Rob's posts, just vitriolic rhetoric against the CINC and name calling of conservatives. Pretty typical for a sheep, actually, so I don't know why I'm suprised...
Posted by: Josh at June 10, 2005 11:50 AM
Poor Josh, that's because you only believe the mendacity that the wingnuts put out. You don't even see the beauty in the fact that as you toss out insults, you defend your postion by saying that's what others do, do you?
Posted by: Rob B. at June 10, 2005 12:12 PM
Observations, my dear boy, not insults.
Since I previously asserted that you were a sheep, what of this statement:
"I don't see any qualitative evidence in Rob's posts, just vitriolic rhetoric against the CINC and name calling of conservatives. Pretty typical for a sheep, actually, so I don't know why I'm suprised..."
is 1)insulting to you and 2)untrue? Or do you just not like being questioned?
Oh, and "mendacity" refers to a condition or state of mind, not a physical thing that can be "put out" as you say, unless you believe that "wingnuts" can personally broadcast or control your thoughts. But thats what tinfoil hats are for, right?

Another reason we think of the left as pot-smnoking loons
Let's face it, you don't smell a lot of pot smoke or see a lot of aging hippie nudists at Support the Troops events.
Posted by: V the K at June 10, 2005 12:27 PM
Back to the dictionary Josh. Try reading more slowly this time.
I think it's fair to say that most people opposed to the war are not unsupportive of our troops. We would like to see them all come home safely. It's the reason they are there that goes challenged and unsupported.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 10, 2005 1:34 PM
NEWSFLASH: Propagating the lie that 100,000 "innocent" Iraqis were slaughtered by American soldiers is not supporting the troops. Accusing U.S. soldiers of systematic torture and atrocities is not supporting the troops. Spouting that the troops' mission is just about oil, greed, and conquest is not supporting the troops.
All of these activities encourage our enemies, and that, most definitely, is not supporting the troops.
Posted by: V the K at June 10, 2005 3:11 PM
As I have read the story, it doesn't read "American Troops Slaughter 100,000 innocent Iraqis", and haven't seen that headline. It implies that as many as 100,000 MORE people have died since being invaded than were projected to be killed before our occupation.
I don't buy the travesty as Amnesty puts it, but let's not pretend that our military are giving bubble baths and fuzzy slippers to prisoners.
It's not the troops' mission. It's Bush's. I don't recall anyone failing to realize they are in the unfortunate postion of pawns.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 10, 2005 4:19 PM
No Rob, it implies that there is a 95% probability that between 9,000 and 195,000 people have been killed since the invasion. That is a huge statistical margin that should never be trotted out as fact, just conjecture. And the 100,000 is an arbitrary figure, somewhere in the middle of the span. It's just as likely that 9,000 were killed as 100,000 as 195,000.
As for what our military is doing over there, by all means, ask someone more qualified to answer: http://iraq.billhobbs.com/

You must have done very well at reading comprehension Josh. (insert sarcasm here). That's not remotely what the articles say, at least the several I read. But, they weren't on right wing blogs, either.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 10, 2005 5:43 PM
I don't recall anyone failing to realize they are in the unfortunate postion of pawns.
Calling them pawns is a snide little putdown that shows just how little respect the left has for the troops.
Obfuscate and parse words all you want, but don't think we don't see through it. If we were that gullible, we'd be liberals.
Posted by: V the K at June 10, 2005 6:32 PM
Actually, I'm citing the Lancet article that began the whole debate as to civilian deaths in Iraq. However, throw your stones if you must. The last several articles you likely read (or had read to you) were at DU or DailyKos, thereby negating any credibility you may have.
Posted by: Josh at June 10, 2005 7:25 PM
One source was the New York Times, I suppose you find that not credible, though.
Calling the troops pawns only shows disdain for the puppet masters that sent them there. There's not as much to read between the lines if you stop making your own gaps in the print.
Posted by: Rob B. at June 10, 2005 9:31 PM
Well, Bucko, has it ever occurred to you that maybe the reason there hasn't been another al Qaeda attack in the USA is because the terrorists are preoccupied in Iraq getting their asses kicked by those "pawns" you sneer at? And maybe some of us like the idea of a president whose response to terrorism is something more substantial than looking up from the bobbing head of an intern long enough to launch a few cruise missiles at an empty camp.

One loose end: "At least we don't have to endure the pain of the denial of realizing that our leader has the vocabulary of a 6th grader."
I guess a Harvard MBA doesn't mean that much anymore. I suppose if Bush had flunked out of law school and divinity school like Al Gore, your side would revere him as a "genius."
Posted by: V the K at June 11, 2005 12:43 PM
I guess a Harvard MBA syllabus doesn't include classes teaching vocabulary skills. He probably did very well in "How to Appear as a Dope" class.
