Left-Wing Academic Compliments Christians

Posted by Dave Blount at June 5, 2005 3:47 PM

If Condoleezza Rice said you were smart, you would probably take that as a high compliment. On the other hand, it wouldn't be much of an insult to be called stupid by Linda Ronstadt, to be called a traitor by John Kerry, or to be called repulsive by Michael Moore.

So Christians shouldn't take it too hard that leftist professor Timothy Shortell considers them "moral retards."

Here are a few nuggets of the wisdom that recently motivated Brooklyn College to elect Shortell to be Chairman of the Sociology Department:

Religion without fanaticism is a logical impossibility. Anyone whose mind is trapped inside such a mental prison will be susceptible to extreme forms of hatred and violence.
Those who are religious are incapable of moral action.
Christians claim that theirs is a faith based on love, but they'll just as soon kill you.

Shortell does offer a glimpse of the tolerance for which liberals are so well known:

On a personal level, religiosity is merely annoying — like bad taste.

Not only would I not be insulted to be called a moral retard by this bigot, I would take it as a compliment.

Update

With thanks to V the K for the tip, it looks like Shortell is not going to be Chairman of the Sociology Department after all. Maybe academia has hit rock bottom and is on its way back up.
