Solution Found to Border Disorder
The Washington Times describes an interesting report written by investigators for the 71-member Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus that finds in the Minuteman Project a model for a resolution to the unfolding disaster on our southern border. The report proves that at least someone in the Government is aware that our country is being invaded.
"The primary impetus to stimulate the Minuteman Project is a border out of control," the reports' authors write. "Social and legal costs and cultural cohesion far outweigh supposed economic benefit. At a time of terror threat, the cost of irresponsibly unsecured borders can be horrific."
The report offers more words of wisdom regarding the border situation:
The tide of illegal crossings on the borders of the United States is beyond unsatisfactory; it is catastrophic. It does not ebb and flow — it only grows. It is rising without measure and eroding the very fiber of our safety, life and culture.
And another excellent point:
As we wage the war on terror in foreign lands, we have all our doors and windows open at home. ... The insanity of such a policy, or silent toleration of such a policy is almost criminal in itself.
As for the U.S. Border Patrol, the report finds that its failure to perform its job is "no fault of its rank-and-file enforcement officers"; however, the agency's brass is found to be in "total denial of the magnitude of the disaster" and "cannot be relied upon" to come to grips with the problem without major changes.
The official line of this same Border Patrol brass was that the Minutemen had no significant effect on stemming the invasion. But according to the report, "nearly every individual Border Patrol officer who spoke off-the-record in the field to the Caucus team said that illegal immigration virtually stopped in the sector patrolled by the Minutemen as a direct result of Minutemen activity and publicity."
The successful efforts of these noble volunteers indicate that a deployment of 36,000 National Guard troops to the border would "dramatically reduce if not virtually eliminate" the flow of invaders into this country. This could be drawn from current National Guard units and could be deployed within one month, "if the political will exists."
This of course is where the problem lies.
What is missing is not the means to control; it is the will. With a will, there is a way.
Are you listening, President Bush?

Of course. Bush doesn't listen to anybody except Karl Rove. Karl runs the country. I thought everybody knew that. Bush could care less about the borders. We still have the right to bear arms and protect ourselves. I think that is the purpose behind those who are walking along the borders today -- in spite of Karl Rove.

You know where I can get a pdf of that report? I may use it in the immigration blog I'm about to launch.

Redhand, sorry but I can't seem to find this report online. It was supposed to have been released Monday. The best link I have is to the Washington Times article. Be sure to give a heads up when your blog is up.
If anyone has seen the report online, the URL would be appreciated.

Karl Rove red herring notwithstanding (do folks still really BELIEVE that?), I am very disappointed with Bush on the illegal immigration and borders issues. I do support many of his other positions, from his unpopular caution and "Choose Life" stance on human embryonic stem-cell research to the War on Terror and strict-constructionist judicial appointments. And, I really love his ties. Perhaps Rove picks his ties out... yea, I could see that. Or Laura.

I blogged on this recently, without the benefit of this report.
My conclusion is that if the Minutemen could do it, so could the rest of America.
I took the time and used my talents to compose a speech for President Bush. Check it out here.
This speech is very characteristic of the way our President speaks, and given his gift of pursuasion, I believe it would do more to protect the borders than the National Guard ever could.
Sorry about the shameless advertising Van. You are welcome to do the same over at my blog any time.

exactly where are we going to get these national guard troops from. I mean do we have an army of clones that we can put in Iraq/Afg/Iran/Syria/S.Korea/Germany/Arizona?
