Wildlife Versus "Social Justice" in Venezuela

Even the leftists at Boston.com couldn't help but find a downside to the totalitarian regime that is congealing around the Castroesque thug Hugo Chavez in Venezuela. Despite indulging in some "property rights equals oppression" spin, and brazenly calling Chavez's dubious referendum win "a resounding victory," they have to admit that stealing property and then handing it out to people who have no legitimate claim to it for political gain isn't all triumphant righteousness.

Of course the disasters that befall property owners are of minimal concern to Boston.com (put online by the same militants who bring you The New York Times and The Boston Globe). But what if someone more important gets hurt? Someone likeā€¦ a capybara (a sort of giant rat)? Or even a tapir, which is described as "a cross between a pig and an anteater"?

The Hato Piñero reserve in Venezuela "has gained support among conservation biologists around the world" by using capitalism to preserve wildlife through ecotourism. For over 50 years, tourists come from all over the world to see tapirs, capybaras, and other exotic animals, including jaguars, in their natural environment. Now the reserve is in deep trouble, because Chavez has pledged to give capitalist land-owning oppressors their due. Evidently the land will be seized, chopped up into small parcels, and passed out to political supporters who have no idea how to use it, as has been done under other enlightened regimes like Robert Mugabe's in Zimbabwe.

This is bad news for the wildlife. But hey, what's a few dead jaguars in the cause of social justice? Don't forget, you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs!

For information on capitalist/libertarian approaches to preserving nature, which has been an extremely low priority under left-wing regimes, see Environmental Challenges & Free-Market Solutions.

Good idea. Let's chop up all the evil agribusiness megafarms here in the US & give them to little people so we can all starve

Sorry for the double trackback ping. I got a "failure" message on the first one, but it obviously worked.
