The Dan's Legacy of Liberal Lunacy
Posted by Dave Blount at March 10, 2005 9:30 PM
The reign of The Dan is now over. But at least he's leaving behind a rich legacy. Check out the compilation of notable quotes gathered by Media Research Center. Below are a few prime examples of The Dan's blather. Don't forget: these pronouncements were not made by an editorialist, but by a man solemnly attempting to pass himself off as a disinterested reporter of objective facts.
The new Republican majority in Congress took a big step today on its legislative agenda to demolish or damage government aid programs, many of them designed to help children and the poor.
And to think the pro-abortion side is called baby-killers! Republicans aren't just heartless; we're corrupt to:
Republicans kill the bill to clean up sleazy political fundraising. The business of dirty campaign money will stay business as usual.
It hits pretty hard to be called sleazy by a man who would have this to say to the avatar of sleaze, Bill Clinton, on behalf of himself and Connie Chung:
If we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, we'd take it right now and walk away winners....Tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her and we're pulling for her.
Dan Rather pulling for Hillary? Who would have thought?
The poor guy must have felt like Cassandra, warning shrilly that the country was veering rightward toward utter doom, with ever fewer listeners:
It is not just Congress that is taking a sharp turn to the right. The surge to the right on Capitol Hill is making waves all over the country on openly politically partisan, and sometimes racist, radio.
How does it feel to be unmasked as politically partisan, Rush, you racist!
Here's how Rather managed to report Bush's election without admitting that it happened:
Good evening. Texas Governor George Bush tonight will assume the mantle and the honor of President-elect. This comes 24 hours after a sharply split and, some say, politically and ideologically motivated U.S. Supreme Court ended Vice President Gore’s contest of the Florida election and, in effect, handed the presidency to Bush.
The Dan's wisdom extended beyond our country's borders, offering some very uncommon insight. For example, did you know that Russians actually liked being slaves under the system that had exterminated them by the tens of millions?
Despite what many Americans think, most Soviets do not yearn for capitalism or Western-style democracy.
Rather was an anchor with a heart. When it came to the issue of sending Elian Gonzalez back to the totalitarian hell from which his mother had died trying to rescue him, Cuba's sentimental dictator choked him right up:
I recognize this might be controversial, but there's little doubt in my mind that Fidel Castro was sincere when he said, "Listen, we really want this child back here."
In time of war, The Dan patriotically used his position to rally America's spirits:
Tonight, savagery in the streets of Iraq. Ten Americans die in a single day, four of them civilians murdered, mutilated and dragged through the streets....What drives American civilians to risk death in Iraq? In this economy it may be, for some, the only job they can find.
Writing in the hard-left Nation allowed Dan to let his hair down a little farther than usual:
Gays and lesbians are beaten to death in the streets with increasing frequency — in part due to irrational fear of AIDS but also because hatemongers, from comedians to the worst of the Christian Right, send the message that homosexuals have no value in our society....In the post-Cold-War era, gays have been drafted to replace communists as the new menace to the American Way.
Perhaps his most revealing statement was made while explaining how it is possible that he regards Clinton as an honest man:
I think you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things.
And possibly his all-time biggest whopper:
Anybody who knows me knows that I am not politically motivated, not politically active for Democrats or Republicans, and that I'm independent.
There are plenty more gems where these came from. A hearty thanks to the MaryHunter for sending the link.
CBS News actually ruled the roost before The Dan took the helm and deftly steered a course from first to a distant third in the three-network race. It's almost too bad Rather doesn't stick around a few more months; it would help build much-needed self-esteem at MSNBC to give them a chance to catch up to the once great CBS. Of course, the ship has taken on so much water at this point, it will probably keep sinking even without Captain Queeg at the helm.
Bye Dan. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
