Comrades Abandon Gunga Dan

The New York Daily News reports that even his erstwhile CBS pals are shying away from the tailspinning Dan Rather.

"He's not as easy to watch as Jennings or Brokaw," Fellow "60 Minutes" spinmeister Mike Wallace offers supportively. "He's uptight and occasionally contrived."

Don Hewitt, the creator of "60 Minutes," observes, "If you're in a three-network race and you come in third, then the public is against you."

Even the granddaddy of talking head moonbats — the former "Most Trusted Man in America," who probably did more than anyone else in or out of uniform to win the war for the Viet Cong — prefers Brokaw to Rather, whom Cronkite accuses of "showboating."

Apparently March 9, the date of The Dan's premature retirement from the anchor chair, can't come soon enough for CBS. Whether they take advantage of his demotion to shift away from pompous moonbattery and toward serious news remains to be seen.

The Dan rehearses for his next position. "C'mon, hit me right here and win the missus a Kewpie doll."
