Democrats Sweat

According to an article on USNews.com, at least a few Democrats are aware of the cracks forming in the thin ice beneath their feet.

"I think we are in for a difficult period," says Bill Daley, Al Gore's campaign chairman in 2000. "Do I see that the Democrats are on some grand march with programs and ideas that will motivate people? No."

According to David Axelrod, a Democratic strategist who worked for John Edwards in the last presidential primary campaign, "The impression is that [the Republicans] have ideas and energy and we are trying to maintain the status quo."

Democratic strategist Anita Dunn still thinks that why they lost in 2004 is a "tough question," but she does understand that it doesn't have to do with fund-raising or get-out-the-vote drives. "It is depressing losing elections, especially one in which so many things went well," she moans. "We didn't get outspent; we did an extraordinary job organizing voters and increasing turnout."

Gilda Cobb-Hunter, a black member of the South Carolina state legislature, has even woken up to the fact that Democrats won't always be able to take the black votes that they need to remain competitive for granted. "How do the Democrats keep young people of color, who are increasingly independent, in the party?" she wonders.

It has also come to some Democrats' attention that people are getting sick of their snobbery.

"We do sneer at red staters," says Daley. "We convey that we are out of touch with the average person."

Axelrod realizes that in the future, Democrats "should not project the cultural elitism that was radiated from Kerry."

Speaking of Hanoi John, however, there is at least one Democrat determined to continue marching resolutely backward into oblivion. He blames his loss entirely on 9/11, which he apparently believes everyone will have forgotten about by 2008, at which point we can go back and live in the Sixties, and everyone will agree with his view that the Islamic terrorism that has already killed thousands of Americans is a "nuisance" on a par with prostitution and illegal gambling.

"It was a hell of a good campaign," Kerry boasted of his loss. His pompous voice was muffled by the sand in which he had buried his head as he opined, "We need to do a better job organizing more people, and we have to be smart about motivating our people to get out."

If Kerry does run again, he will almost certainly be thrashed, given his disgraceful behavior since getting beaten by President Bush, and the fact that the word "LOSER" is stamped in bold type across his botoxed brow. But he offers hope that he will nonetheless volunteer as the Republicans' piñata.

Air bubbles emerged from his mouth as the utterly deluded Kerry raved from the deck of his sunken ship, "I want to continue the fight. Lots have said go run again. There is lots of positive feeling and energy. Folks are not discouraged."

I'm sure not discouraged.
