Ebenezer Award for Most Ridiculous Anti-Christmas Moonbat
Moonbats have got to be relieved to have put another Christmas season behind them. All those mangers and angels and worst of all crosses, whichever way they turn. It must be like taking a shower in holy water, or walking around with a clove of garlic stuck up one nostril.
The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, "an international, interfaith, public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the free expression of all religious traditions," has announced the winner of their annual Ebenezer Award for 2004, awarded for "the most ridiculous affront to the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays."
This year's proud recipient of the prize, a lump of coal in a red stocking, will be Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Washington, whose Principal, one Mark Robertson, canceled a performance of A Christmas Carol by a private theater group on the school's campus, reportedly on the grounds that this world famous piece of literature could be regarded as religious.
"Dishonorable Mention" was earned by the Plano (Texas) School District for totalitarian efforts to suppress any reference to the holiday many if not most Americans regard as the most important of the year.
Second runner-up was Macy's Department Stores, where the phrase "Merry Christmas" was banned. Something to keep in mind if you're ever tempted to shop there.
It should hardly come as a surprise that the top two outrages occurred in that dystopian alternate reality known as our public schools. Fanatical administrators will intone that some (meaning themselves) find Christmas "offensive," but why exactly is Christmas offensive? Are they really afraid that any reference to Christianity will cause their skin to sizzle and smoke? Or could it be that hatred of their own civilization makes them resent Christmas for representing it at its best?
